Open up your hood and take a close look at the belt toward the front called a serpentine belt. This belt drives all of your mechanicals including the power steering. If the belt is in good shape you may have a power steering pump that is going bad. If you are not sure what you are looking at take your car to an auto zone auto parts store as the people there are always willing to come out to the parking lot to check out your problem for free.

WITH ENGINE OFF check for any fraying, or needs an adjustment or the belt is plain bad. I used to know some people run it until they fry it unless you have a frozen part like a pulley you can do it if you are handy with tools or take it to a mechanic or Dealership.

What is making this 08 caliber 2.0L sxt cvt have a High pitched whining sound at idle and driving?

Possible bearing in one of the drive pulleys. I have changed numerous alternators for this noise. Take the belt off and start the car. If the noise goes away you know it will be pulley related and not transmission related. If noise goes away, spin all pulleys by hand to determine the defective/noisy one

1999 Ford Ranger Front right brakes are making a grinding sound and a high pitch when i turn left, Do you know what it is ?

the grinding sound and the high pitch sound may not be related.
the grinding in the brakes means it is time to replace the brake pads / shoes and either replace or repair the discs and drums.

the high pitch noise that you are hearing while turning is more likely caused by a worn belt, low power steering fluid, or a faulty power steering pump.

Although it could be indicating something more serious like hub bearings going out, your best bet is to take it to a front end shop that offers free estimates and have them diagnose it in person.

hope this helps.

It sounds like a loose serpentine belt. Check the belt for cracking or frayed edges. It may need to be replaced or simply tightened.
If the sound is minimal or gone when the engine is idling, and you hear it whine when you step on the gas, then the belt is probably your issue.

Yeah Michael, try tightening the belt on it just a bit tighter. You may not hear slipping belt but it is slipping. But then you say it doesn't work at all at idle, sounds a bit more like a week pump or is too low on fluid. For fluid, just use GM trans fluid, it's cheaper and the same thing as expensive tranny fluid.

2006 Hyundai Sonata: Wet road causes power steering failure

Ok, the high pitch sound is your idle pulley bearings going bad. The splash of water is exactly that, the belt gets wet and slips. Definitely a pully, more than likely the idler pully.

High pitch noise seems to be steering and temperature related.

I have a 2003 Ford Windstar also. You probably will need to replace the power steering motor. It will get worse, and if it goes out, it may lock up your serpentine belt, and you'll be on the side of the road.
