Question about 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse

Ok i put my eclipse 420a engine back together i did a headgasketjob.mycrank pully is lined up but my teeth on the cam gears are1/4off or onetooth off how do i adjust for this. if i move onesprocketit wont lineup and i dont have a manual to see how to set thetimingcan someonehelp or point me where to get a free manual pdf or zipfilethanks. orsend me text out a book please . i have a 97 eclipsethank ufor anyhelp. the reason i started looking at timing was theenginewould lopelike the timing was off and it did not have sparkfireeither . ichanged coil and crank and cam sensors to fix butnothingchanged and ichanged the 2 boxes on the firewall beside clutchresivor

Okay, im going to try to make sense out of this, the crank pulley mark is not too helpful, when timing mine i put the mark where it had to be but then put a rod down the spark plug whole on cylinder to to get a true tdc reading, an the mark was a tad bit off, 1/4 tooth shouldnt matter any its when your getting into a full tooth you will have a problem, and as far as your original error, it may be the cam sensor, after its running unplug the cam sensor and see if that does it becuase then it will be running ignition off the cranksensor, which is the failsafe and none performance way of doing it, but then if the problem is fixed plug it back in until you can get another one otherwise you will fry coils upon startup. any other help send me an email Yamaha4life127@yahoo.com

Not sure but if doing belt yourself I will give you important tips. 1) before removeing T/Belt set engine to TDC nr 1 there should be marks on the crank and cam (s) gears that line up with a mark on the block / head. 2) prior to removeing tension to belt get liquid paper & mark cam gear(s) & crank gear to point on block / head. 3) mark T/Belt to cam(s), crank, balance shaft if fitted. 4) release tension & remove belt. 5) transcribe marks from old belt to new belt & make sure correct amount of teeth. 6) fit new belt so YOUR marks line up. 7) have tensioner suply presure to belt. 8) turn motor twice by hand to make sure pistons no hit valves 9) Make sure YOUR marks line up if YOUR marks line up it has to be right. 10) Very IMPORTANT if spring tensioner lossen locking bolt again to take up extra slack in belt. 11) tighten locking bolt. 12) put back together.

Dont know the marks for the timming belt on a 01 kia reo 1.8L


Not sure about Rio 1.8 engine as they are normally 1.3 and 1.5 out in 2001, but maybe yours ha same engine as the Sephia.

How do you set the timing when installing new timing belts


Depending on make and size of engine u need to get the #1 piston at tdc top dead center u do this by taking the spark plug out of the #1 cylinder put yure finger in sparkplug hole and turn cranshaft till u feal yure finger being pushed out by compression now take a straw and put it in the spark plug hole u will need a breaker bar on larger engines to turn the crank with the bolt on the pully small 4 cyl u can turn it by hand once u feal the straw being pushed out of the whole turn the crankshaft back and forth to get the straw exactly where its all the way up just before it goes back down yure at tdc now on the gears there is a dot or a mark on the front side line them up using a straight edge line them up so both marks are on the inside facing one another pull both gears out leave the bigger of the two on the shaft place the belt on the smaller of of the cam shaft now u want to put the belt on the bottom side of larger gear and try and get the teeth so the top and bottom gear marks line up again when u push cam gear on splean of cam shaft if they apear to b lined up a little at a time push crankshaft gear n a bit then cam shaft gear switching between the two till they are all the way seated and there u go

Swapped a 1999 420A engine into a 1995 eclipse (also a 420A) and we have no spark. We started by checking the cam sensor and it is working properly it is upside down from the 95 but the ASD relay is...


first the cam sensor shouldn't be upside down from the 95. they both should be with the plug facing down. they 95 CAS has a different plug than the 99 CAS.
the 95 has round pins and the 99 has flat pins.

besides that it could be the ecu. i also have heard of the locating pin on the intake cam shearing off, allowing the gear to turn with the timing belt without the actual camshaft spinning.

remove drivers wheel then plastic wheel arch then put jack under engine and remove the engine mount then take off fan belt and timing belt cover mark your two top cam pullys and the crank pully then remove your belt and tensioner put new belt and tensioner on making sure all your marks line up then put on the crank pully and turn engine over twice by hand using a ratchett on the crank pully bolt if it turns over and your marks still line up put it all back together and start the car

hi from uk the cambelt timing marks at TDC are as follows--the crank gear mark is lined up with mark on front of engineblock at approx 10-30 am position the marks are clear as you look ? the cam coghas a dot/pop mark just below teeth this mark is at top ie 12-0'clock position now on cam cog you will also see s hole drilledon the cog web also at 12-o/clock if you look thro this hole (use a mirror ?) the hole lines up to a grooved vertical line at the rear which is on front of engine at this point you fit belt fron crank pully anti clockwise round cam cig then reset tensioner when marks are rechecked with belt fitted/tensioned ? turn engine manually two full rotations clockwise then recheck all mark line up again ? then re assemble ? c/shaft pully bolt tightens to=170-180 Nm hope you notice that the new belt is marked as to its rotation with arrows hope this helps ?best wishes from uk

turns out the two arrows on the cam pullys face up then you can see line type marks by the teeth on either pully faceing each other

I'm assuming that you're asking how to make the car faster with bolt-on modifications.

1. Buy a cold air intake. Preferrably one that puts the actual filter in the fender well. That will help to bring in cooler air, making the air/fuel mixture more dense= better combustion(more power)

2. Exhaust. I'd start with a cat-back exhaust system. They are usually found pretty cheap on ebay. That will help with finding some higher rpm power, and since it starts after the catalyctic converter, it's legal. You might also look into some equal-length headers.

3. Underdrive pulleys. These help lose weight on the rotating assembly of the engine. That will help your engine rev quicker and get you into the RPMs where you make power.

Those will be the easiest for making bolt-on power. If you were to get deeper into the engine there would be better ways to make power; such as cams, forged pistons, nitrous, turbos, etc.

Once you start making some power, you'll probably also want to look into ways to make sure it's getting put to the ground. I would suggest getting a heavier clutch and a lightened flywheel. The heavier clutch would hold more power and the lighter flywheel would allow the car to rev up faster, allowing you to get into the power quicker.

the timing marks on your crank and cam crank need to be one on top of the other if you understand what i mean. anyway if this is done correctly, your cam should make two revolutions to one of the crank thus after one full revolution of the crankshat gear your camshaft gear should do 2 revolutions and you timing marks should be next to one another

Need to set timing on a 88 subaru 1.8 liter


The crank shaft pully will need removal and the water pump pully as well, also the 2 inspection covers and the center housing cover that they conect with, when removed all of the timing belts will be exposed as well as crank shaft end. I used a screw driver angled wedged and held in on the teeth of the fly-wheel to lock it in position so I could remove the crank shaft pully bolt, (standard lefty-loosey threaded). This would have been easier with the fly-wheel locking tool from subaru, or even just a budy to hold the fly-wheel while i turned the bolt loose at the crank pully. I unbolted the fan and slid it out of the way, I did not even need to unplug it. just be sure battery is not conected. The oil dip-stick tube has one 12 mm bolt at the end of a brace at top of engine. loosen and pull up and forward to remove. the crank shaft bolt-you will need to put back in the bolt only! on the end of the crank shaft so you can rotate the engine manualy with a socket on the crank shaft pully nut, while looking through the hole on the top of rear engine area just above fly wheel. wach fly wheel as it turns, look for 3 lines side by side these are not the timing degree marks they are seperate from them, align them to the little arow on the houseing in front of the 3 little marks. be sure the e-brake is set, trany in nutral so engine can turn freely. inspect the cam shaft pullies, on the surface there are 4 evenly spaced holes, there is one tiny hole that lays between the other holes, this little hole that is the pully mark, it needs to be at the twelve oclock position, there is a small groove on the housing at the twelve oclock position as well. align the two with each other, the little hole with the little notch directly above. do the same for the other side cam pully, same way. loosen the idler pulies for each belt, 2 bolts, move it to its full retracted position, pushing on it with fngers against spring tention, titen one of the nuts so the pully stays retracted/pushed. remove old belts, being carefull not to move the place marks of either of the 2 cam shafts or the engine crank placement. put in the new belts check to see if belt has a direction of dravel and match with engine, mine it did not matter but was told that it may with other belt makers? i don't know about that? but thought it was worth the warning?
once belts are on be sure again that marks all mate with marks on all 3 points crank and fly-wheel, both cam shaft pullies with notchs, now release the tnsion on the idler pullies, and retighten where they fell. check again on the 3 timing points be sure they have not moved again... tireing but worth it. if the have moved off of any mark you must realign it by moveing the pully to the rite spot and putting the belt back on. one tooth off on the drivers side of engine cam can meen up to 16 degrees of timing lose either way of perfect. once aligned, put the center cover back over the crank shaft, bolt on. put on the oil dip stick, put on the water pump pully and crank shaft pully, put on belts. leave the fans out untill all is done, just be sure they are free of obstacles so if they come on later it does no harm to it, you, or anything else. leave off the inspection covers at each cam pully. be sure to un block the fly-wheel. re asemble engine and componants to the installed normal positions as best as posible. re conect battery, be sure all tools are clear, start engine, if it will not run smoothly re set the distributer for timing, if still runs bad, you may have one or both cams off by plus or minus 1-2 teeth one the belts. this was hell... you have to move one side one tooth and start the engine and time it again, if that was not it then you move one tooth in in the oposite direction from the oiginal spot, now 2 teeth the oposite way. if not better put back on the original tooth, and do the same to the other cam one step and start at a time untill you find it to work the best, it may even be off by 1 tooth on the rite and 1- tooth on the left. This was a nite-mare but i finaly found the rite placements.
take 2 aspirin, advil, etc. pre-medicate for the manditory headache. and best of luck..
if you are wondering if the valves and the pistons may have struck, forget it subaru made this 1.8l engine as a none contacting engine, this meens that they can never touch piston to valves even in a cam belt failure.
