1999 Lincoln Town Car shifter stuck in park

Gear shifter won't move out of park. Neither restarting the car nor stepping hard on the brake helps.

This is not just a Lincoln issue. Cars with an automatic transmissions have a shift interlock that makes you deprsess the brake pedal to get the car out of park (to keep people from accidentally hitting things).

If pressing the brake pedal does not let you to move the gear selector, see if there is a small reset botton by the gear selector. (The owners manual may point out where to find the shift interlock button. On some cars, you may have to remove part of the console). In any event, do NOT just try to force the thing out of park - you will just wind up with more problems than you started with).

If you do not have brake lights and you need to drive the vehicle somewhere to get it repaired you can turn the ignition switch to the on position but stop just short of activating the electronics, then you can get shifter to neutral and then you can start it and drive it.

Look at the swith on the brake pedal, it shoud have two green wires on it. Make sure it is not melted or the wire is broken. If it is damaged you can connect the 2 wires together to get it into gear, but this should be temporary as it bypasses the neutral safety switch.

Have some one help you, start the car and have some one stannd behind it and watch the brake lights.
step on the brake normally and see if the brake lights come on, if they do then see if it comes out of park, the most common problem is the brake light switch fails and it does not release shifter. if you step on the brake and the brake lights do not light up then switch is bad , then step on brake hard and see if lights come on if so then again brake switch is bad, the brake light switch when brake pedal is pushed sends power to brake lights and then sends power to shifter release to unlock shifter. good day.

I have a 2000 Lincoln Towncar that will not come out of park and also the 3 brake lights are not working..PLEASE help me solve the problem

Jo Ann , under the brake pedal there is a switch that is bad that needs replaced. To side step it so you may travel/ use your car. With 1 foot on brake turn key to on position then move gear shifter into natural turn key all the way to start, bam car is out of park and ready to roll/ drive.

GEAR SHIFT STUCK IN PARK HAVE NO BRAKE LIGHTS

check the fuses as if the brake light fuse is blown it won`t allow the shifter to move out of park.it has a shift interlock system so the gear shift won`t accidentally be moved out of park by mistake.

Gear shift has locked up

sounds like brake shift interlock solenoid is bad. try doing this emergency bypass. Turn key to off position, no lights on cluster. step on brake, pull shifter out of park to neutral. start car & drive away without putting it in park. see owner manul for better description.

Having trouble puting my car in gear even pressing the brakes.........can you please help me by letting me know what might be the problem thank you i have a lincoln town car

It sounds like your shift interlock is not working. There is a switch on the brake pedal that activates a solonoid that unlocks the shifter. Try moving the shifter up twards park then apply the brake and try to pull out of park. If it does not release then you may start by cleaning the solonoid.

1997 Lincoln Towncar. Shifter stuck in park

There is a switch mounted on the arm of the brake pedal (under a plastic cover held on with 3 plastic push-pins). There is an electical connection attached to this switch. In my case one of the wires had broken and was not supplying electricity to the switch. By fixing the broken wire it allowed the shifter to properly move and got the brake lights working again.

Gear locks when i park on even a slight incline

ALWAYS engage the Parking Brake BEFORE putting car into "Park". When you want to get out of "Park", put your foot on the brake pedal, move gear shifter into desired gear, THEN take down Parking Brake. If you get stuck (gear shifter doesn't move), then try the "rocking" method (recruit 1 or 2 folks to push your car from behind while you try to move gear shifter into desired gear). Good luck!
