Question about 1985 Volkswagen Jetta

1 Answer

97 Jetta dies once alternator is connected.

I have a 97 Jetta 2.0, and the car runs fine when the alternator isn't hooked up to the battery but once i touch the alternator wire to the battery or the starter positve, the car starts to stumble and dies. I already went through different alternators and batteries and also had my ECM diagnosed and turned out to be ok.

The alternator keeps the car running not the battery.

Voltage regulator

Sounds like a bad connection. The alternator only charges the battery, so if it or the voltage regulator in the alternator fails, the battery would slowly run down, not die all at once.

REPLACED STARTER THEN RECHARGED BATTERY CAR STARTED FINE THEN DROVE FINE THEN GAGES ON DASH STARTED GOING CRAZY ALONG WITH RADIO THEN CAR ACTING LIKE IT WANTS TO DIE NOW WONT START

sounds like your battery is dying,, have it LOAD tested,, it could show 12 volts, but the amperage isn't up to par,, even with one bad cell the battery will drain , also,, once you know its fully charged, start the vehicle,, use a meter at the battery posts to check the voltage,, you should get a reading of 13.5-14.5 volts, if not your alternator isn't doing its job, make sure all battery connections are clean and tight.

Replaced battery and alternator. car runs and either dies or I turn it off and the battery is dead. I have started it and pull the positive battery cable and engine will die

on new cars never pull the cables off while its running, it can fry your computer, charge the battery (i've gotten both bad batteries and alternators from parts stores) have the battery LOAD checked, if one cell is dead,, its never going to charge correctly, and any parts store can do this for you,, once its charged, start the car,, you should have a reading o f `13.5 to 14.5 on the battery posts, if not the alt isn't working, Make sure every single connection is clean, even where the battery grounds against the motor and car body itself,

Have you tried the key switch? I am no mechanic, but a friend of mine had the same problem in his 02 Jetta. He replaced the key switch and it works just fine now.

97 Lincoln Mark VIII / Something killing the battery

If the alternator you installed was rebuilt, it may not have been right from the beginning.
There are high powered diodes used in them to rectify the alternating voltage produced to supply the DC the car needs.
These can fail quickly and without warning.
It is possible that a defective battery could cause this failure so a shorted battery could have caused both the original and replacement alternator to fail.
If you are in the US, you can visit about any of the chain auto parts stores and they will test your alternator free of charge but call first to check if your local store offers this.

If the regulator for the alternator is separate; some are, some aren't, this should also be tested if separate and is not that costly to replace.
