Uninstall/Reinstall Alternator on a 2000 Ford Ranger XLT 3.0 V6

I replaced the battery a month ago. Now the alternator needs replacing. What size tools will I need to uninstall/reinstall it, and how difficult is it? I'm a 53 yr old female and am mechanically inclined, and thought I might try to do it myself. So I need all the instructions/details on how to do this. I'm going to purchase the alternator today...April 16, 2009.

Thank you for your help!

You can go to and type in all your vehicle information. the choose the alternator in the buy parts section. there is a link on the side that will either say how to or repair. click on that it will have a diagram showing you how to do it. hope that helps.

I have a 2000 ford ranger xlt 3.0L. Alternator, spark plugs, battery, battery ports, and fuses have all been replaced. The alternator isn't charging the battery. What could possibly be causing this?

Do you battery voltage at the wire on the back of alternator ? How about the connector with four wires , should have voltage at a couple of those wires too . When you turn the key on does charge indicator light ?

Briefly installed battery backwards. 2000 Ford Ranger. New Battery, new alternator, but alternator not charging battery. Truck starts on battery-new starter motor. Lights work, all electrical works

Is this the alternator that was in the vehicle when you hooked the battery up wrong? If so, you probably blew out the voltage regulator in the alternator.

Check your rear end to see if you have a sensor like in this video, if so it could solve some issues. The video describes items all going out around the same time. Its based on a 2 wheel drive but who knows you might have the same sensor in the same location. This is a shot in the dark, but who knows it might help or point you in the right direction.

Check your operator's manual. Make sure any and all fuses that have anything to do with the affected items are not blown and are working properly. If you can; check for loose fuse connections or wires. Hope this helps. God bless!

I think the alternator on my 99 ford ranger isnt working, this problem happened a year ago. thus it could be the problem again, so i think that a fuse is the problem, but i dont know wherre the fuse is on...

first you need to test the alternator to make sure it isnt working. you can take it to a parts store or you can do it in your driveway by starting the truck and disconnecting the battery. IF it dies then the alternator is bad. If it doesnt, then you have another problem. you need to check the voltage regulator and see if it is putting out too much. This will cause premature death to an alternator. It is also possible you just got a bad one. I had the same problem only it was a battery that lasted less than a year. Its been 3 years on the replacement and I am fine.

Check the alternator first and then the regulator

My 2000 ford ranger and something draining battery

bad alternator possible or bad battery..even though its new that battery can be bad. I would take a volt meter and with the engine running check the volts of the battery..If the volts are 12 you need to replace alternator, if volts are 14 you need to check the battery. to check the battery hold the volt meter to the battery and have someone start the car..while the starter is cranking battery volts should not drop below 10volts.if they do your battery is bad.
