Question about 1997 Audi A4

1 Answer

My speedo is playing up. It seems to happen when the weather is wet! The dial mostly sits at 0 then bounces up and down eratically. It has never happened when the vehicle is dry. Could it be water sitting somewhere disrupting the sensor? Please Help, its driving me crazy!

Thanks emissionwiz, it is a 4 door 1.8 1997 b5 audi a4, there is no cruise control, and the car runs fine, smooth through all the gears and accelerates smooth too.

More likely the speedo is defective (it is electronic), if the Vehicle speed sensor (tells speedo how fast u are going) was the problem the trans would not shift righ and cruise control would act up as well.

How do repair my speedo

I'm surprised the mileage stops recording. Had a similar problem and found that when the car battery was starting to die (soon needing to be replaced) the same thing would happen, gas gauge bounced around and went to zero. A friend pointed this problem out to me, he had the same problem. Check your battery's health.

Most likely a dirty speed sensor. Pull it out and clean it off and put it back in. May need replaced.

Speedometer bounces from current speed down to zero (where it sometimes sticks)

It won't be a cable, as it's impossible for a cable driven speedo to perform this way.
It's an electronic speedo.

Check and/or replace the speedo sensor in the gearbox housing.

I have been told I need to replace the struts on my car at 45,000 miles. What would be the signs to tell me this is true? I was shown where they had leaked on the cylinder however the place they showed...

Struts and shocks stablize the car when driving. usually when they are bad if you hit a bump it will continue to bounce 5,6,7 times. also to check you can go to the suspected strut and bounce the car by pushing down on it do this several times and if the car keeps bouncing it is bad. it should only bounce once. and if stuts or shocks leak it would be wet on the cylinder where it came out

Cutting out in wet weather and No power steering in wet weather?

I sounds by your explanation, that the belt which drives the alternator is slipping when it gets wet.
When this happens the alternator stops charging the battery, and when battery voltage drops the engine cuts out and won't start due to not having enough current to supply electrons as well as starter motor.
Have the belt tension checked, as well as charging output of alternator, should fix it.
