Question about 1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Coupe
Put new fuel pump in. the pump runs and stops in seconds car wont start. spray gas in throtle body car runs. my guy working on it is lost and so I"am I. I hope to get some help. It seems like their is no current staying at the pump
Are you sure that the fuel pump is working fine?
common causes are always - fuel injector or fuel pump.
If you are not sure you can purchase a tester ( Its inexpensive ) :-
If fuel pump is fine,
ow, there are 3 wires to the pump. A grey one and a black one.
The grey one supplies power, the black one supplies ground.
Using a Digital Volt/Ohm meter (DVOM), check power to the grey wire when the key is turned to the ON position. Test lights are not good to use, as there is a possibility of fire hazard.
Check fuse marked ECM B (20 Amp) to make sure it is good.
Also, when cranking, does the oil pressure gauge move? The oil pressure sensor for the gauge, is also a fuel pump switch. But with the key on, engine NOT running, the pump should prime. Does it?
Ok, all that said, if the ground is no good at the pump, then nothing will work
If the wires are fine too,
I guess that's "FUEL PUMP RELAY"......
This is how fuel pump works...
As soon as you turn ON the ignition switch to start the engine a 2 second ONLY battery voltage signal is sent from the computer to the fuel pump relay and from the relay back to the fuel pump in the fuel tank. This runs the fuel pump for ONLY 2 seconds of which pressurizes the fuel system in preparation to start the engine.
Once the engine starts, The computer BYPASSES the fuel pump relay and sends constant contionous battery voltage from the computer to the oil pressure switch of which is now CLOSED because the oil pressure is UP because the engine is running. Therefore the battery voltage flows thru the oil pressure switch back to the fuel pump to run the fuel pump constantly until you turn OFF the engine.
I hope you would agree and the bet would be either fuel pump/relay.
