Stand in front of the car, open the hood, and face the engine.

On the left hand side of the radiator, at the top, is the upper radiator hose; which goes to the upper water pump connection.

On the right hand side of the radiator, from the bottom, is the lower radiator hose; which goes to the lower water pump connection.

Things You'll Need

• Waste oil collection pan
• Needle nose pliers
• Phillips head screwdriver
• Wrench set
• Socket set
• Antifreeze
• Water

1. Draining the Cooling System
   • 1 Locate the petcock valve on the lower right corner of the radiator and place a waste oil collection pan underneath it.
     
   • 2 Open the petcock valve by turning it counterclockwise, using needle nose pliers.
     
   • 3 Wait until all the coolant has drained out then close the petcock valve by turning it clockwise.
     
   Removing the Radiator
   • 1 Loosen the hose clamp that connects the upper radiator hose to the radiator using a Phillips head screwdriver. Then pull the upper radiator hose off the radiator.
     
   • 2 Loosen the hose clamp that connects the lower radiator hose to the radiator using a Phillips head screwdriver. Then pull the hose off the radiator.
     
   • 3 Unscrew the transmission cooler lines from the radiator (automatic transmission only) using a wrench.
     
   • 4 Unscrew the bolts that secure the radiator to the core support, using a socket.
     
   • 5 Lift the radiator straight up to remove it from the vehicle.
     
   Installing the Radiator
   • 1 Lower the radiator into position behind the core support. Be careful: the cooling fins are thin and can be easily damaged.
     
   • 2 Screw the bolts that secure the radiator into the core support. Tighten with a socket.
     
   • 3 Thread the transmission cooler line fittings into the radiator. Tighten with a wrench.
     
   • 4 Slide the lower radiator hose onto the fitting on the bottom of the radiator. Slide the hose clamp over the fitting and tighten with a Phillips head screwdriver.
     
   • 5 Slide the upper radiator hose onto the fitting on the top of the radiator. Slide the hose clamp over the fitting and tighten with a Phillips head screwdriver.
     
   • 6 Fill the engine with a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water.
     
   • 7 Run the engine and visually inspect for leaks.
     

This procedure makes a bit of a mess and requires catch pans but it is the best way to flush a coolant system without cutting any hoses or adding a flush kit.


If your radiator does not have a drain plug is to remove the LARGE lower radiator hose and drain the anit-freeze. (Even if it does have a drain plug the steps below are the best way) You then plug the lower radiator hose connection on the radiator and have a 2nd person add water to the radiator with a hose. They will need to place a rag over the fill port for the radiator and flush the block until you get clear water from the lower drain hose. Once you get clear water drain off the fresh water by unblocking the lower radiator fitting and flush the radiator. Once you get cleanwater from the radiator connection, reconnect your lower radiator hose. (Tighten the clamp!) Then add your anti-freeze. Remember there will still be a some water in the block so do not be afraid to keep your anit-freeze / water ratio a tad higher because the left over water in the block will dilute it slightly.

Thermostat Removal & Installation To Remove:

1. Drain the engine coolant.
2. Remove the air cleaner.
3. When disconnecting the radiator lower hose connection, put mating marks on the radiator lower hose and hose clamp before you disconnect them.
4. Remove the water inlet fitting.
5. Remove the thermostat.

To Install:
Thermostat

1. Install the thermostat so the jiggle valve is facing straight up. Make sure not to fold or scratch the rubber ring. CAUTION
   Be certain that no oil gets onto the rubber ring of the thermostat. Also be cautious not to scratch or fold the rubber ring as you install it.
   
2. Install the water inlet fitting.
3. When connecting the radiator lower hose connection, do the following:
   • Step 1: Insert each hose as far as the projection on the water inlet fitting will go.
   • Step 2: Line up the mating marks on the radiator hose and hose clamp, then connect the radiator hose.

Radiator Removal & Installation To Remove:

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
2. Disconnect negative cable.
3. Drain cooling system.
4. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Radiator upper crossmember
   • Upper and lower coolant hoses from the radiator
   • Transmission hoses from cooler
   • Engine oil cooler lines (if equipped)
   • Radiator fan electrical connector and fan assembly
   • Condenser mounting screws located at the front of the radiator
   • Transmission cooler line bracket from left side of radiator
5. Lift condenser upward enough to disengage upper mounting clips. Allow condenser to rest on lower radiator crossmember.
6. Lifted radiator from engine compartment.

To Install:

1. Seat the radiator assembly lower rubber isolators into the mounting holes in radiator lower support.
2. Attach air conditioning condenser to radiator
   • Torque to 45 inch lbs. (5 Nm)
3. Install or connect the following:
   • Radiator lower hose
   • Transmission cooler line bracket and transmission hoses
     1. Torque to 28 inch lbs. (3 Nm)
   • Radiator fan and electrical connector
   • Engine oil cooler lines (if equipped)
     1. Torque to 160 inch lbs. (18 Nm)
   • Radiator upper hose
   • Radiator upper support crossmember
   • Negative cable
4. Fill cooling system with coolant.

Step 6 Remove the drive belts or serpentine belt.

Step 7 Remove any hoses connected to water pump.

Step 8 Unbolt water pump from engine. Remove the water pump.

Step 9 Using a gasket scraper, clean the mating surface on the engine block.

Step 10 Install new water pump and new gasket. Tighten bolts to manufacturer’s specifications.
o Tip: You may want to use a light bead of silicone designed for water pumps.

Step 11 Re-install any hoses and belts that were removed.

Step 12 Re-install drain plug or lower radiator hose.
o Tip: Squeeze the radiator hose. If it feels soft you may want to replace the hose at this time. Always use new hose clamps.

Step 13 Refill radiator with a 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water, then pressure test the cooling system and check for leaks.

Step 14 Fill overflow reservoir with same mixture.

Step 15 Leave the radiator cap off, start engine and let it idle. You should see the system“burping” bubbles of air. Refill the radiator to the top.
o Tip: Most air is expelled after a couple minutes of idling. Be cautious of potentially hot fluid overflowing.

Step 16 Install radiator cap.

Step 17 Road test vehicle, keep an eye on the engine temp gauge if vehicle runs hot, there still might be an air pocket in the cooling system. The cooling system should be topped off after vehicle has fully cooled down.

Instructions Things You'll Need:

• Ramps and jack stands
• Phillips and flat head screwdrivers
• Container for used coolant
• Crescent wrenches or Ford disconnect tool T82L-9500-AH
• Hex nut screwdrivers
• New radiator
• Flush treatment
• Coolant

1. Step 1 Drive your Ford Taurus up a set of ramps onto a pair of jack stands, if it is a 1996 model or newer. Remove the lower splash shields. For 1986 through 1995 models, you can remove all necessary components from above.
   
2. Step 2 Begin by disconnecting the negative battery terminal and draining the radiator into a transportable container. Open the plastic draincock on the lower rear of the radiator and crack the radiator cap.
   
3. Step 3 Remove the overflow tube from the coolant recovery bottle and disconnect it from the radiator. On SHO model engines, remove the recovery bottle as well. Next unscrew the shroud and remove it from the retaining clips. Disconnect the wires to the fan motor, and remove the fan assembly and shroud in one piece.
   
4. Step 4 Squeeze the hose clamp ends together on the radiator side, and remove the upper and lower hoses. For automatic transaxle models, use either the custom Ford disconnect tool T82L-9500-AH or two crescent wrenches to remove the transmission coolant lines.
   
5. Step 5 Disconnect the radiator supports. 1986 through 1992 models will have two upper retaining screws for 3.0 liter and SHO engines. 3.8 liter engines will have two driver's side hex nuts and two passenger side screws. All other models have either the upper screws or the combination of right hand hex nuts and left hand screws.
   
6. Step 6 Tilt the radiator backwards toward the engine and lift it out. Fit the new radiator into the support and replace the support screws and nuts. Reattach the hoses and wires in reverse order.
   
7. Step 7 Flush the new radiator with either water or a commercial flush treatment. Connect your battery terminals and replace the coolant and let the engine idle for 5 to 10 minutes with the heater on and the radiator cap removed. Top off the coolant as necessary.
   

First drain radiator by opening drain valve,"located on bottom corner usualy the right,but not always." If you open the overflow or remove cap this will happen much faster.For safety sake disconnect ground wire from battery,the radiator is locked down by top cover that attaches to body with generaly 4 bolts, upper and lower hoses have to be disconnected and if it is automatic the transmission cooling lines are connected in stacked fashion,"one above the other."The cooling fan has to be unplugged and it should be removable at this point,"when unplugging fan be carefull with connector so it doesn't break.reverse steps to replace making sure the bolts go in the right place and it all fits properly.the thermostat,"located behind the kneck of upper hose," should be replaced after connecting lower hose because in order to fill the block up and prevent damaging thermostat the block shoud be filled with coolant before attaching upper hose.
