Question about 2005 Ford F 350 Super Duty

1 Answer

I have a 2005 f-350 super duty 4wheel dr with 6 liter diesel and it seems like the power steering pump quits sometimes for a mile or so and then its ok again. When it happens it is hard to keep it in the road. It jerks to the right and then when you try to correct it it goes to far the other way. The belt is new because I thought it might be slipping and that didn't fix the problem. What is your advice?

Power steering fluid is full? Sounds like it might be a power steering pump. It has hydroboost brakes that are controlled by the Power steering.

the power steering pump also is connected to the brake booster and both take vaccum this is a verry common problem and sucks, the only way to fix this is to get a new power steering pump, just to have it happen again in a few years.

Power steering pump is weak. If a hydraulic gauge were placed on the pump, you would find it only able to produce about 200-400 psi at an idle. PS requires up to 1500psi. A new pump would produce 1500psi at an idle so replace the pump and you will be fine. By revving up the motor you are able to make the pump put out more psi. The pump is defective internally. Get a good one from the junkyard. Most PS pumps last the life of the vehicle.

check out the steering stabilizer(it's the shock on the steering linkage) for wear. If it shows signs of leakage replace it.
