Question about 1999 Mercury Villager

1 Answer

Belt question Hi. My friend was told her serpentine belt on her 1999 mercury villager was defective. She was at an "oil change only" place. I checked and saw the Fixya for a 1993 village serpentine belt replacement. That looked like the timing belt replacement procedure. Are there other postings for just the front main belts?

There should be a diagram under the hood on a sticker showing the routing of the belt. When they said the belt was defective, did they just mean it needs to be replaced? Also check the owners manual (if you have one still).

You should clarify which engine it is, and you can look under the hood near the radiator for the serpentine belt instillation diagram that is on a sticker. Rick

I've changed my idler pulley and tension pulley on my 1999 mercury mountaineer and my belt keeps coming off and it's a new belt also. What else can be the problem?

Yolanda, did you only change pulley on the tension er, the tension er arm may be worn and miss aligning belt allowing belt to drift and fall off. I will post some links below of what to check for.

Changed timing belt and front oil seal now oil preasure light comes on and sounds like no oil

I would be checking that the hydraulic belt adjuster has not popped out and allowing the oil to be sprayed on the new belt

Timing belt runs ruff. when it gets hot it stops

The ruff noise you have on the timing belt shows the belt quality, which is better to change the belt with a recommended by the manufacturer, for better results and more protection and safety.

My villager stutters and cuts off. it always turns back on through. there is also a rattle sound coming from the area where the serpentine belt is. could the belt be the problem

The rattle from the Serp belt is probably an idler or tension pulley.
If the electronics shut down when the van does. Time for a new computer.
If the electronics are still working, (Radio etc.) then inspect the belt for any wear marks or cracks.
If you still feel that the belt may be the problem check that all the pulleys are turning when the car is on (and AC engaged.) If a pulley is locked up it could stop the car but would show signs of the belt wearing.
Another possible cause would be clogged fuel lines or rust in the gas tank. Only test the last one if the electronics and belt are in working order.

Changing a Timing Belt

at 150,000 miles pretty much everything could be worn out if it is all original, if the van is in really good shape no dents or bad dings paint good, interior is in really good shape and the van has been serviced on a regular basis then yes fix it, also this is a free wheeling engine so if the timing belt breaks there is no damage to the engine, if it ran good with no excess oil useage or engine noise fix it..

My 1999 mercury villager just died

I do not think you have anything to worry about, I have replaced timing belts on villagers for years and have yet to see any engine damage. The 3.3 eng. is a free wheeling engine. Hope this helps out.
