Question about 1993 Subaru Impreza

93 Impreza L Crank no start

My son was told the IAC was bad by previous owner. Car would run, but not get over 1000 rpm. While replacing the IAC, my son removed the throttle body to clean it. When he replaced it, the car will crank but not start. We double checked his connections and lines, they were ok. Engine is sucking air through air box, has spark, and we can hear the fuel pump operate when we first turn the key. Any suggestions?

After replacing said items, we are in the same predicament. Thx for the suggestions, though.

Try replacing the coolant temp sensor. I was baffled with the same issue until I sat down and searched the web for like 8 hours! This is finally what came up. Seems like alot of people have this issue. My 95 started with the fans going constantly and then one day just refused to start. My dad also recommended changing the o2 sensor and the thermostat. All cheap and not a bad idea to replace anyways.

Car won't idle

First if the "service engine" light is on I would have a local retailer or garage see what the codes are. For possible TPS, IAC, or mass air flow problems. TPS being "throttle position sensor" IAC being "idle air control" If a light is not currently present, listen under the hood for a hissing noise or signs of a vaccum leak.

When putting car in reverse car dies

no year, wow.!
sounds like gross loss of engine power
or
you started car and didnt notice RPM was 400 rpm.
the engine has almost no power at that rpm.
the normal cold start (winter) is about 1500 RPM.
if not at fast idle fix bad fast idle (Bad IAC)

when i say bad IAC that means the system IAC is bad,not just a part.
the IAC /ISC controls idle at all times, via ECU commands.

I TUNED UP MY 87 LESABRE 2.8L REPLACED PLUGS AND WIRES, IT STILL WOULD STALL AT STOPS, THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT WOULD COME ON IT WOULD BUCK AN CUT OFF ONCE THE CAR WARMED UP IT WOULD RUN WITHOUT A PROBLEM....

hmm

try turning the ignition on,, let it sit for 30 seconds ,, switch it off and then start ,,,

if it works then your fuel pump is sending too low pressure,, change the pump...

if not then change the IAC valve and the oxygen sensor and the engine coolant temperature sensor..

check for a blocked catalytic convertor, disconect the exhaust from the manifold or the conection to the convertor and start run the vhicle and see if it makes a difference if so replace unit, if not, then check the IAC sensor and mass air sensor

Over reving on start up

make sure all the connectors are on the throttle body and nothing is binding. Jeeps have a service bullitin about something like this. Try removing the IAC and clean the pintal area or replace the IAC. I have a 93 wrangler and I have had this happen to me. I cleaned it and it worked. Try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes then try it again. This will reset the IAC to MIN. If this allows it to start at a lower RPM then you Isolated the problem. Try tappping on the IAC also. It may be sticking. Either way if anything make a difference then you will prabable need An IAC.Make sure you have no vacuum leaks anywhere. A vacuum leak will hold the idle higher also and the computer will close the IAC as far as possible to compensate.

Heres why you have a high RPM
When you start the car if you have a stuck open IAC or vacuum hose leak the O2 sensor will see this extra air and add fuel to compensate to maintaim a 14.7 to 1 ratio but also the computer will see your foot is off the gas and the throttle position switch is closed. Under this condition the computer will want a precalibrated RPM which is between 660 to about 750 rpm +or- some. It will close the IAC till it reaches this level.

STARTS UP, RUNS ROUGH, THEN DIES

You have done everything almost. But find a bad resister that is shutting down your quad driver in you computer,You need to ohm them out the reading should be 12.0 ohms to12.4ohms.the top plenium will have to come off. this was a major problem in the late 80's and 90's.

Engine surges at rpm over 1500

Look for a vacuum leak (lines and intake), Is the engine light on, were any codes present? A faulty EGR or IAC could cause the problem too. Check the throttle cable for any restrictions.

Accelerating

once you change fuel octane it may run sluggish because the car is used to running at a better octane to run more efficient. go back to 93 and see if that may change it back to normal (note that it may take your car a few runs to get back to normal)
