ENGINE REVS REALLY HIGH WHILE AT IDLE AND SOMETIMES STALLS COMPLETELY OUT AND DIES. WILL CRANK RIGHT UP EVERY TIME WITH NO PROBLEM. ONLY DOES THIS AT IDLE. ONCE YOU START DRIVING IT IS NOT NOTICEABLE. I HAVE CHANGED THE FUEL FILTER.

Check all of your vacume lines. If it isn't a vacume line it is most likely the O2 sensor.

If you are off the throttle when you do this, it could be the IAC ( Idle Air Controller ) not opening far enough to allow air in.

The plunger in the IAC can get gummed up, and not operate smoothly.

You will need to remove the plastic throttle body cover to get access to it.

It is held on with 8 mm head bolts. Once you have it off, you can clean it with MAFS or Throttle body safe cleaner. I cleaned mine the 1st time with 90% Isopropyl alcoholand Q-tips. Not sure if this method caused the replacement ( same symptoms 2 years later ) or not. A replacement for my '01 a the time was ~ 70.00 + S/H online.

The inside should be clean once you are done.

5.4l ford engine surges when idling

You may have a sludged up throttle valve and air bypass idle speed control valve, do the following to correct that.

I want you to get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

sounds like transmission damaged. if forward gears are operational, suspect transmission failure. If nothing working ( either in 2 or 4 wheel drive) suspect transmission or transfer case.
