There should be plated links on those chains too. There is an index dot in both cams on each head that set at the twelve o'clock position.

SOURCE: how do you align the camshaft & crankshaft timing marks 1.9

This is the same as a Ford Escort 1.9, the #1 cylinder should be all the way up. To confirm- the crak shift mark should be on zero which is Crank Shift Center- THe camshift sproket should align with the headmark. Make sure both marks don't move. Align the belt- not too tight , not to loose

Timing belt

You don't have the tension right. Belt should be tight when tensioned, tight enough that it can't slip. I'm not familiar with this engine, but you need to find the belt tightening procedure.
Go to autozone.com, register for free, giving make, model, year, and engine size. When registered, look under "repair guides" for timing belt R&R procedure.

THE CAMBELT ON MY 2006 COLT 2 litre LDV HAS BROKEN WHILE IDLING. WILL THERE BE DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE?

Most multi-valve engines suffer damage when a cam belt snaps I am afraid to say..however about 1 in 100 don't so I hope yours is the 100th. Good luck.
On NO account attempt to crank the engine or further damage will occur.

Needing step by step instructions for replacment of a timing belt in a 1989 dodge colt

If this is something you have never done , best left to someone that has...engine damage can occur if not done 100% properly.

If you feel your able to do it...get a Chiltons or Clymers manual....it will have you all the steps needed. These can be obtained at any major parts store.
