Ignition switch...instrument lights...won't start

1997 jimmy when i turn the ignition switch on it won't start unless the instrument lights come on. Sometimes they come on but most of the time they don't but the engine cranks but just won't start untill the dash instrument lights come on and then it starts right up. What is the problem?

TRUCK WILL ONLY RUN WHEN THE IDIOT LIGHTS COME ON WITH IGNITION. MOST OFTEN YOU GET NO DASH LIGHTS OR FUEL GAUGE & CRANK - NO START

My truck did the same thing lift up the leather around the gear shifter on the floor and see if any of the wires are loose in the white conector.

Dome light and key in ignition tone won't quit.

Yes, I would lean toward a stuck drivers door latch. Your door open switch is located in the latch itself and the ding is a reminder your key is in the ignition so you don't lock them in the vehicle when you lock the door. even though your door is shut, the truck still thinks it is open. sometimes spraying the latch with some WD-40 will get it freed up and working again, but a new latch might be in your future.

Just won't start! fuel pump ok, filter ok, psi ok, turns over just won.t start

You'll have to figure out if it is a fuel or ignition problem.
Is the check engine light on ? Have you checked for trouble codes ?
It could be a relay, the ignition module, coil, or a list of other things.
Even the fuel pump.
If this is a vortec V6 it takes at least 60psi to cover the injectors.

I have a 1997 GMC Jimmy with a 4.3L Vortec V6. It will turn over but won't start. It's getting fire and fuel. All the dash lights come on when the ignition is turned on and you can hear the fuel...

On the vortec engines they require 56 pounds of fuel pressure to start a few pounds shy of that you have a dead vortec you will need a fuel pressure guage to verify

My 97 jimmy will crank but won't turn over. Is it the starter and if so, where do I find it so I can replace it.

If it cranks, but won't start (which is what it sounds like you're saying) the starter is NOT the problem. Check ignition and fuel.

'97 GMC Jimmy: engine turns over but car won't start, electrical?

Sounds like a bad ignition switch but could also be a bad connection to the ICP or just a plain old bad ICP (Instrument control panel). The ICP needs to be able to communicate with the ECM, Brake Control Module and the SDM (sensing and diagnostic module). If these can not "talk" to each other the vehicle will go into a lock out theft mode...assuming it has a factory VAT system. But I would bet on the ignition switch first...seen it many times.

My 1997 Jimmy wont start when dash info lights are not on

Try replacing the ignition wiring harness in the steering column. These wires control I think everything electrical. I did and it fixed my problems.

1997 GMC Jimmy sometimes will not start

I had a similar problem several years ago on my 97 Jimmy. There is a switch in the steering column that had gone bad, had to be replaced and no problem since. The symptons sounded just like yours. My trusted mechanic found the problem after a lot of testing and fixed it.
