Question about 2002 Pontiac Grand Am
You got a restriction in engine block.its full of rust.flush block out by taking the thermostat out.remove the top hose to thermostat then move lower hose to water pump .place a container so the lower hose can catch the water as you flush out block with water hose.flush from the top where thermostat goes flush until you get a good stream of water from bottom is clear.before you start this procedure drain out antifreeze first. flush out over flow jug make sure its not stop up. and change the radiator pressure cap.

You definitely have blockage somewhere. I would take it & have a professional flush it.
