Question about 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

1995 chevy caviler hard to start, and running poorly.

Sometimes when you start the car the check engine light is on, the cooling fan runs constantly, idles at about 1000 rpms and misses and the mixture smells rich. the other times you start it the check engine light will be off, the fan will not run, it idles at 600 rpms and still misses, and either way it runs it trys to die. i read in a chiltons manual that the ecm controls mixture, idle, and the coolent fan. it also mentioned a back up mode for the ecm but did not explain what the back up mode was, how to tell it was in back up mode, what the back up mode would cause, or if something was wrong with the ecm. i also dont know if the ecm is whats causing the problem. anything you can tell me will be appreciated. oh and how to get the ecm out of back up mode if that is what is causing the problem.

This message is for carhob.I tried scanning the PCM on my 95 cavalier like you said. All the scanner will say is "LINK ERROR" try again? I must have tried atleast 30 times and it would not access the PCM. I also have a 96 cavalier. I used the scanner on it and it worked fine. I know they started switching from the OBD-1 to the OBD-2 system in 94 and 95 so on the chance it was an OBD-1 system I went and bought the OBD-1 scanner. It wont fit. So the system on the 95 is supposed to definately be an OBD-2 but the scanner would not access the PCM. Please help. I'm stuck.

The first step would be to take it an have a diagnostic scan tool hooked up , Don't worry about back up modes . From the sound of it you know very little about ODB 2 an computer control emissions . Your not going to learn anything from a chiltons manual ! Your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop . I have over thrity years in the automotive repair business an i can tell by your post that you will never be able to repair this , so do yourself a favor an take it to a professional

SOURCE: Gas mixture

I don't know what year you are working with, but I have an 87 that was doing the same thing. I converted the air filter to a K&N system and did away with the old filter box. The problem did not go away. I talked to a Toyota specialist and he told me in the top of the mass flow sensor there is a plug that you need to drill out. There is an adjustment screw that regulates the air mixture with the gas. It is located on top of the mass air flow sensor that connects to your air filter box.

SOURCE: Burning smell, check engine light-misfire, rough idle 96 cavalier

Sounds like there is a blown piston, to be sure have a compression test done on that #2 cylinder, if the reading is low, then you'll know.
A friend of mine had a 95 that did simular things only a little more,
it started smoking, dash lights flickered, etc. Finally, he had to get rid of it, the piston rod went through the engine block.

Why does car shift hard and cooling fan stay on?

you have a code in the ecm that needs to be checked out in order to fix the problem. the fan staying on is indicative to a problem detected.

Why does cooling fan run constantly on 2004 pontiac sunfire

Have you checked the ecm for trouble codes ? The fan runs all the time as a safety to try to prevent the engine from overheating.

Car fan running constantly with car on and check engine light on.

Possibly a bad coolant temperature sensor, sending the wrong signal that engine is hot and requires fans to be on for extra cooling. I don't know of any sensors for the thermostat, but don't know saturns.

this is normal for most vehicles, it is because the water temp in radiator continues to rise after you shut the engine off. would not worry about it unless it dose not shut off at all. or never runs

Location of the temp.cooling switch /or sensor for radiator cooling fans on 2006 chrysler 300 c

The radiator cooling fans are controlled by the engine managment computer, it uses the signal from the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECT), unless the engine is hard starting or runs poorly the sensor is not the problem. Also the Check Engine light would be on, is that the case?

An341@hotmailcooling fans come on soon as the engine starts and check engine light is on as well ?

Had a related/similar problem with my 1995 Subaru Impreza; cooling fans would come on and check engine light would illuminate (while fans were running). Problem resolved with replacement of coolant temperature sensor.

99 chevy Cooling fans wont come on Chevy Malibu ??? Can i wire them hot to come on ?

Yes, you could wire them to run anytime the ignition is on, but that is not a good idea. Have you checked the fuse? Have you checked to see if the fans actually work? Turn the A/C on and one fan should run continuously. Have you replaced the thermal relay for the cooling fan? You need to just find out why they do not work. Running them continuously is not a good idea. You want the engine to reach full operating temperature as soon as possible. And you do not want to be constantly cooling it down by running the fans all the time. This will cause poor fuel mileage.
