Where is the thermostat on a 1996 Ford Contour?

I don't have a auto repair manual for this vehicle to find where the thermostat is and I don't want to go digging around just yet not having the part.

Follow the upper hose from the top of the radiator back to the engine block, and the thermostat will be in the housing at the end of the hose. The housing is somewhat elliptical with two big bolts in it.

My 1996 Ford Contour is overheating and sometimes smells like electrical burning

Yes and no. The thermostat can cause a overheating concern but not really a electrical burning smell. I would also make sure the cooling fans
are working also.

you don't repair it, you replace it. jack it up, remove the brakes, and all the brake assembly from that axle,, then remove the bearing cap,, cotter pin, and nut from the spindle , ( you might want to replace the wheel bearing at the same time due to the bad axle ) remove the axle bolts,, and shock bolts, from the axle beam. remove axle beam assembly

Head gasket blown, how deep do i go to repair and prevent over heating problem

as long as you are replacing head gaskets, check all coolant lines for leaks, also replace thermostat and when done. flush out cooling system and radiator good. then you should be ok !! make sure radiator hoses are good and not collapsed on inside. have a good day ! when head gasket is off of vehicle. make sure the coolant ports on engine block are not plugged.
