well... all three lights came on at once... i just got an oil change, i put engine coolant in. now the car won't start. i think it might be the alternator.

  • kguth3 Apr 17, 2009

i need to jump it, cause it just clicks when i try to start it

  • kguth3 Apr 19, 2009

well after you start it the 3 lights stay on, and as you continue to drive all the lights turn on, and then all the meters drop as if the car was off, and then the car dies. it is a brand new battery too, i got it a couple months ago

  • kguth3 Apr 24, 2009

i brought it into a shop, and it turns out it was a bad alternator, so they replaced it for free seeing as though i just had them replace it a couple months ago. now the car seems to be running fine. thanks a lot for your help.

Wow, 3 problems, did the lights come on one at a time or all at once? How long has each been on? 1st thing is to check fluid levels-brake, & oil. You may damage the vehicle if you continue to drive it. The brake light means a malfunction in the system, or low brake fluid. If the level is low, adding should turn the light off. You then need to check to see where the system is leaking. Oil temp light, or is it just oil light? This will go on when you basically have no oil in the engine, or the oil pump has failed, both very bad. Battery light indicates the vehicle is not charging the battery. Check the drive belt, did it break? This could cause a bunch of lights to go on. Let me know the answers to the above, so I can help to refine my answer.

When you turn the key, does the engine crank over?

  • Curt Downs Apr 17, 2009

Ok, you can jump it and it starts? What about all the lights, they are all on after jump starting it? Before buying an alternator, have the battery checked out at a parts store. They can give it a free check and tell you if it's just low charge or shot. If the battery is ok, then yes, yank the alternator and have them check that out.

The battery may just need a charge, due to the possibility that the alternator isn't charging it. Since the brake light and the oil light are on, you probably shouldn't drive it due to possibly doing further damage to the engine, and the possibility the brakes may fail (because of the lights being on, they could indicate serious problems). I know the local auto parts store here will lend a scan tool to read engine trouble codes. You probably have to leave a deposit of some kind. They can tell you how to use it. It just plugs into the cars diagnostic connector (usually under the dash) and it 'reads' trouble codes stored in the cars computer. You really need to do this to get some kind of clue as to what is going on with the Pathfinder.

Does it say 'emergency brake' or just 'brake'? If it just says brake, you could be low on brake fluid on your 2001 Nissan Xterra.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The incorrect battery was installed , the alternator is defective or the wiring connected to the alternator and battery cables are defective (corrosion and looseness)

Brake and battery light don't turn off.

1. Your battery is not charging appropriately (the alternator has gone bad)

2. Top up your brake oil or have your brake system checked.

But be sure to take the car for diagnostic scan too.

92 Nissan Pathfinder brake lights stuck on

Change the brake light switch on the brake pedal arm. Go down to the parts store and ask for a new brake liight switch for your Pathfinder and look up under the dash where the brake pedal arm goes and you will see the switch. You will need to unplug the wires to your old one and disconnect it and install the new one the same way. It is pretty much self adjusting once the brake pedal is released. If the brake light does not go out adjust the switch pin to be longer so it will depress when the pedal is released
