I dont think it would run

  • hotsilverton Apr 16, 2009

He just means that the timing mark is moving around when he puts the time light on. Part of the certification is to make sure that timing is within certain degrees. If the mark is moving then it fails. The truck runs fine. It is 89 3.0 V6

The balancer and pulley appear to be one in the same

  • hotsilverton Apr 16, 2009

So smarterer, the pulley and balancer are one part then, correct?

also, Is replacing it a difficult procedure?. does it involve removing the timing assembly?(like replacing the water pump)

i suggest you take off the distributor cap and rotor... you will see a part on the shaft with two small springs on it... at least it should have two small springs.... if it doesn't you have located your problem.

Replace the harmonic balancer pulley.

  • Smarterer Apr 16, 2009

The harmonic balancer and pulley has the timing mark on it and when they get old and wear out the outer part can spin (at a different speed than the crankshaft) making it impossible to check the ignition timing with a timing light. The two pieces have a layer of elastic polymer (rubber) between them that breaks down over time. The harmonic balancer absorbs crankshaft vibrations so the engine runs smoother and the crankshaft and bearings last longer.

Failed emissions hc high

First I recommend changing spark plugs, air filter, and change the oil & filter. If these are dirty or fouled up it will kill your millage and help to fail smog.
You can reduce both NOX and CO emmissions by adding denatured alcohol to the gas tank. Run it down to a bit under 1/4 tank and add 1 1/2 gallons. It makes the engine run a bit rough, but really clean.
If you still fgail SMOG then you need a new catalytic converter.
I used to "trick" my 86' with alcohol, but just rebuilt the engine so I put a new Cat on it. It passed emissions with WELL BELLOW numbers.

Good luck.

Hello...I have a '95 GMC K2500 Suburban with a 5.7L that failed a recent emissions test. I replaced the spark plugs, removed and cleaned the EGR...cap, rotor wires look OK...truck re-tested worst

Retarding the timing will cool the combustion which will lower the Hydrocarbon number,it will run bad but after a passed e test put the timing back to an advanced state which may help with the stumble.

1990 toyota pickup with 22re engine and 235000 miles failed smog in cali.,not because of emissions but because timing was at 30 degrees instead of 10. It starts and runs well. I have not adjusted timing ....

Reset the engine timing by first jumping pins E1 and Te1 in the grey box under the hood. If the truck runs poorly set to proper timing, your timing chain has jumped a tooth. Does it rattle bad at idle? Id so, the guides are worn out, and the chain is stretched.

check the timing with timing light.. also if you have alot of miles on it, the timing chain may be worn out..take the dist cap off..use socket on crankshaft, turn to left till rotor turn, then slowly turn to the right, if you move it alot before rotor turns the chain is worn out

Failed Smog Test Close to CA-HC Limits

You can try some over the counter solutions per say. Some of the mechanics in a bottle. They sell some products This will probably be the cheapest router. If this doesn't work then you need repairs.

Pass your emissions test.

TRAC LIGHT ISSUE

The trac light does NOT come on for the smog test. It has noting to do with the smog test. The trac light DOES come on when the Check Engine light comes on, when a failure is detected. From what I remember, the trac light WILL come on if the smog is a "dyno-driven" smog test, but it has nothing to do with the test, the trac simply comes on because only one wheel is spinning, just like it will when you are spinning on ice.. Hope this helps.
