Question about 1995 Nissan Pickup

3 Answers

SPeedometer not working.

My speedometer has been intermittent and fluctuating for about two months. Today it has almost totally quit. I say almost because it slowly runs up to about 10 or 15 mph and won't go any higher. When it quit today, my "Check Engine" light came on and my cruise control quit working. I understand the old cable driven speedometers, but this has me baffled and I consider myself to be a fairly knowledgeable and skilled mechanic. HELP!!!

Thanks,
John

As recommended, I changed the speedometer sensor on my truck and, much to my dismay, the problem still remains as previously described. Here are the particulars. The truck is a 95 Nissan, Frontier body style with a V6, automatic trans, and 2 wheel drive. Still willing to try any suggestions.

The original problem: My speedometer has been intermittent and fluctuating for about two months. Today (now yesterday) it has almost totally quit. I say almost because it slowly runs up to about 10 or 15 mph and won't go any higher. When it quit today, my "Check Engine" light came on and my cruise control quit working. Actually, the problem has changed. Today is wasn't even going up to 10 or 15 mph, before or after the sensor change. After changing the sensor I have a slowly flashing "Check Engine" light and still no cruise control. I'm at a loss.

I would run a scan for codes on check engine light. I bet it is your speed sensor.

Im sorry, I thought for sure it was the sensor. It usually is.. I guess my next suggestion would be to have code scanner put on the truck because it is most likely an electronical problem. Could be the cluster itself but doesn't explain the cruise control.

My speedometer goes up and down , and my radio goes on and off

The speedometer can fluctuate rapidly under normal driving conditions when the car's speed changes abruptly, but sometimes the needle can start swinging around the dial without any fluctuation in speed. If the hairspring comes loose or breaks, it can't hold the speed cup in place, and the result is a fluctuation in the dial. In electrical speedometers, if the circuit that counts the magnetic pulses fails, it can cause the speedometer read-out to vary from the actual speed and to shoot upward or downward without notice. If a speed sensor in the automatic transmission starts to malfunction, it can affect the speedometer and cause fluctuations. In these instances, either the speedometer or the sensor needs replacement.

Tachometer does not work and speedometer is intermittent

Since the speedometer comes off the transmission and the tachometer comes off the ignition, they are totally separate except for the ground circuit. So check the dash ground cable, or add another one.

Speedometer works intermittently

It is most likely the speed sensor in the transmission.

My speedometer quit but the odometer still works (1998 F150) can you solve this

Usually it's the opposite. The speedometer works and the odomater and trip meter go inop. Most likely the speedometer assembly is bad. If the odometer is working you have a signal from the gray and black wire .

Intermittent speedometer failure

Try replacing the speedometer sensor, located on the transmission under the car. There will be a few wires going to it with a plug. The speed sensor is a retivly low cost part, and most of the time when it begins to quit it will give irratic readings on the dash.
Hope this helps!
