I have the same issue and have replaced the EGR valve. Do you have to clean anything in the intake or should replacing the EGR valve do the trick?

The EGR valve helps your car more efficiently and completely burn fuel by recirculating a portion of your exhaust and running it through the combustion process again. This results in a cooler, more complete burn of the fuel which decreases you car's noxious emissions by prohibiting the formation of some harmful gases.

The EGR valve is vital to your car's emission controls.

When the EGR valve goes bad, it must be replaced - it cannot be repaired.

  • EGR Valve = Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve.
  • The EGR valve controls formation of noxious emissions.
  • Rough idle and poor acceleration can be caused by a faulty EGR valve.

  • The EGR valve, or Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve, is a vacuum controlled valve which allows a specific amount of your exhaust back into the intake manifold. This exhaust mixes with the intake air and actually cools the combustion process. Cooler is always better inside your engine. The exhaust your EGR valve recirculates also prevents the formation of Nitrogen related gases. These are referred to as NOX emissions, and are a common cause for failing emissions testing. Unfortunately, your EGR valve can get stuck, causing NOX gases to build up. You'll know if your EGR valve is stuck or malfunctioning because your car will experience symptoms like rough idle and bucking on accelertaion.

The only short term problem is a decrease in gas mileage - but it should really be replaced before sensors become sooted or your cat. convertor gets overworked prematurely.

Take the negative battery cable loose for about an hour (30 min may be enough as recommended but I did it for an hour), after replacing the EGR valve. This clears all codes in the computer. Put a thin layer of high temperature silicone gasket sealer on it. Be extremely careful removing the inside bolt to the eGR valve so as not to drop it in the motor as I did. (The symptoms on my 2001 Impala was a jerking as if turning the switch on and off quickly).

Put a thin layer of high temperature silicone gasket sealer on the gasket. Be extremely careful removing the inside nut to the EGR valve so as not to drop it in the motor. (The symptoms on my 2001 Impala was a jerking as if turning the switch on and off quickly). It did it mostly going up a grade at about 50 to 55 mph but sometimes at other speeds. Make sure the ports are cleaned out first.

How can i stop my security light from coming on when i start my 2004 3.4 liter chevy impala ?

Hi Glenn, did you by chance replace your PCM with a used computer? If so you will need to have it reflashed, If not sounds to me like the Passkey security needs to be relearned. Also wondering why you replaced PCM after replacing EGR valve, Please if you can give me some more info on your veh. Body control module controls security so something is not right. Please get back to me, Thanks Randy.

catalytic converter, egr valve, oxygen sensors. If you have that many miles on it, try loosening the exhaust before the cat converter and try driving it. If your power has come back, then it has failed internally.

There is a sensor that is under the harmonic balancer that needs to be replaced. That will solve your starting problem. This model year Impala is a bad year and should have had a lot of recalls. I got rid of mine due to the same issues. Your car eventually will stall in traffic and wont start. It may sit for days without starting then will start without any problems. Best advice: Get rid of it now!!!

I have a 2003 chevy impala i changed the egr valve and my check engine light is still coming on and a part store read my code and it said egr valve what else could be the problem

The code in the ECU might not have reset after you changed the EGR. Try unhooking the battery and let the car sit for a couple minutes and then hook it back up and see if the light goes away.

there are a couple of things, first make sure there are not restriction in the exhaust, i know the dealer has had to replace converters under warranty because of this problem, then theres a reflesh program for the computer due to this problem, and lastly, run with egr off make sure it clean of carbon, carbon gets stuck in pintle sets check eng lightbut carbon then blows by so when you remove egr you see nothing, well start with these good luck.
