U must disconnect the battery for at least 1/2 hour and also the airbag diagnostic monitor, then the bag is safe to remove, failure to disarm the bag correctly can result in serious injury or death.

If the brake lights will not turn off, the switch on the brake pedal is shorted or damaged. Look for it on the brake pedal under the dash. You will not need to remove the steering wheel.

It's unlikely the turn signal switch. Try disconnecting the switch mounted directly above the brake pedal. If the light turns off the problem is in the brake switch. They commonly go bad and can be picked up at a gm dealer for about $15.

You don't
You need to disable the air bag system
Remove the steering wheel
Then replace the clock spring you damaged, under the
air bag and steering wheel.
On some vehicles, you need a scanner to
reset your steering position, not familiar with yours

If you had not moved the steering shaft ,you may have gotten
lucky. It happens to all of us. That is how we learn 50% of the time

I HAVE NO BRAKE LIGHTS OR BLINKERS

IF THE 3RD BRAKE LITE WORKS ALL OF THE TIME, THEN IT IS THE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH. iF THE 3RD LITE DOESN'T WORK, THEN IT COULD BE SOMETHING ELSE. TO REPLACE THE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH, YOU HAVE TO PULL THE AIRBAG AND STEERING WHEEL. IT TAKES SPECIAL TOOLS LIKE A PULLER, AND A COMPRESSOR TOOL. ASDDITIONALLY, THE AIR BAG CAN CAUSE SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY, TREAT IT GENTLY.

How do you repair or replace a wiper switch. I want to know how to disassemble the housing

STEERING Steering Wheel REMOVAL & INSTALLATION All Series CAUTION
When performing service around the SIR system components or wiring, the SIR system MUST be disabled. Failure to do so could result in possible air bag deployment, personal injury or unneeded SIR system repairs.
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. On models equipped with a drivers side air bag, perform the following procedure:
    1. Disable the Supplemental Restraint System (if equipped).
    2. On all but 1996–98 models equipped with a air bag, unfasten the screws at the rear of the steering wheel.
    3. On 1996–98 models equipped with a air bag, turn the steering wheel 90° to access the rear shroud holes to the inflator module. Insert a screwdriver in the holes and push the leaf spring to release the pin. Turn the steering wheel 180° to access the remaining shroud holes and using the screwdriver, release the remaining pins.
    4. Tilt the inflator module rearward from the top to access the wiring. Tag and unplug the lead wire from the clip on the module, the lead wire from the clip on the steering wheel and the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) and retainer from the module.
  3. If not equipped with a drivers side air bag, remove the horn pad or button cap and disconnect the horn wires. Fig. 1: Remove the horn button cap 87988p13.jpg
Fig. 2: Disengage the horn wiring 87988p14.jpg
Fig. 3: If equipped, remove the snapring from the steering shaft 87988p15.jpg

  4. Mark the steering wheel-to-steering shaft relationship.
  5. If equipped, remove the snapring from the steering shaft.
  6. Remove the nut from the steering shaft. WARNING
Don't hammer on the steering shaft!
  7. Remove the steering wheel with a puller. To install:
  8. Install the wheel. The turn signal control assembly must be in the Neutral position to prevent damaging the canceling cam and control assembly. Tighten the nut to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm).
  9. Install the horn pad and horn contact (if equipped).
  10. If equipped with a drivers side air bag, install the inflator module as follows:
    1. Attach the lead wire to the clip on the module, the lead wire to the clip on the steering wheel and the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) and retainer to the module.
    2. On 1996–98 models, install the inflator module by pressing it firmly into the steering wheel so that all four notched pins in the leaf spring are fully engaged. Be very careful that you do not pinch any wires.
    3. On all but 1996–98 models equipped with a air bag, install the inflator module and tighten the screws to 27 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
  11. Connect the battery ground cable and enable the SIR system (if equipped). Fig. 4: Remove the nut and washer from the steering shaft 87988p16.jpg

Have a 99 gmc jimmy and when i toggle the turn

hi, to me this doesn't sound like a column issue, sounds more like a bad ground in one of the lights, or modules in the back light clusters. when power is applied to one bulb, and there is no ground for that bulb, electricity can backflow through another grounded bulb and illuminate it. i think you should check this first, but if you want to get in the steering column, first disconnect the battery power, then ground, and leave disconnected for at least two minutes before removing airbag. the airbag has screws from the backside of the steering wheel to remove, usually only two, one on each side, but sometimes four. when you remove the screws, they may not come all the way out, meaning, loosen them until they are loose, they might stay there. then pull straight towards you to remove airbag. there will be a yellow connector and a horn connector to remove, and if you have cruise control in the steering wheel, there will be two small connectors for this to remove. when you go to remove the steering wheel, make sure you mark the clocked position with a marker pen before you remove so as not to re-install incorrectly. also make sure to have the steering wheel centered and straight with the front wheels pointing straight ahead. when you press off the steering wheel, there will be a plastic piece called a clockspring that you pulled the connectors out of. note exactly which way the connections is and make sure to either tape it to this placement, or don't move it around when removing. if you turn the clockspring one turn, one way or the other, when you put back on, it will be overclocked one direction and when you go to make a turn the other way, it will break internally causing the air bag light to come on and you will get to replace the clockspring. one more thing, place the airbag facing upwards when storing during repairs in case it accidently goes off, it will not lauch into the air like this, and store on an open area.

The best way and the safest way if you are going to be removing the steering wheel ,is to unhook the battery cable,And make sure the cable cannot fall back to the terminal on it's own while your working inside.
