One pulley does not move all the time with the serpentine belt, but when it does you can hear a rattling sound and when the pulley stops so does the sound.

it makes the noise and the pulley cycles on and off even when the ac and heater are off. also when i give it gas, but when i let off the gas the noise stops. when idling and everything off the fan starts to move when the pulley does too.

That should be your air conditioner pump. If you turn off the AC or the defroster it shouldn't turn on.

If it is very noisy it should be replaced. There should be a wire or plug on it that you can disconnect if you want it to quit running.

If you do disconnect it, your air conditioning will not work anymore.

There is a magnetic clutch that activates whether the pump is running or not

My first guess would be to inspect the starter ( does the pinion gear retract all the way?). I would also inspect the flywheel (for damage or possibly cracked). Sounds can move around the engine compartment in a strange way. Where you think it is coming from, could actually be in a different area. If the starter and flywheel are fine. I would remove the serpentine belt and and inspect every pulley. Check that all of them spin freely and quietly. You should hear nothing. If you hear rattling, crunching, squealing, or feel excessive play, you may need to replace one of the following: water pump, idler pulley, tensioner pulley, A/C clutch, alternator, or power steering pump. If you find anything else and or can give more details, maybe I can help further. Good luck.

My 1998 sebring 6cyl makes a metal on metal noise on the side of my engine by the belts i tried greaseing all the pullys and i used belt noise sparay but it becomes lower and then it becomes higher ???...

sounds to me from the brief description like you have either a water pump rattling, or a timing chain coming slack. Is the noise coming from the alternator? Never grease pulleys, ever. also the stop squeak spray is bad for your belts. Don't know why they even sell it. If you listen carefully you may be able to pin point the rattle. Is this a tick tick tick, or a rattle rattle rattle? Does sound like a water pump rattle or timing chain slap though. Hope this helps

Obviously one of the pulleys is loose or the tensioner is faulty.
I would check all of the pulleys before trying to put the belt back on.
You should find a bad bearing or broken spring.

My villager stutters and cuts off. it always turns back on through. there is also a rattle sound coming from the area where the serpentine belt is. could the belt be the problem

The rattle from the Serp belt is probably an idler or tension pulley.
If the electronics shut down when the van does. Time for a new computer.
If the electronics are still working, (Radio etc.) then inspect the belt for any wear marks or cracks.
If you still feel that the belt may be the problem check that all the pulleys are turning when the car is on (and AC engaged.) If a pulley is locked up it could stop the car but would show signs of the belt wearing.
Another possible cause would be clogged fuel lines or rust in the gas tank. Only test the last one if the electronics and belt are in working order.

Rattling from the engine when I start the 2006 V6 Sonata

Do you have the air conditioning on when you hear this rattle? If so, it could the clutch for the a/c compressor. You may also want to check the status of the idler pulley on the serpentine belt. Hope this helped and best wishes.

Serpentine belt

rempve the belt again and hand spin the pulleys listening for a loud bearing type noise in one of the pulleys .. you see anything that spins has a bearing in it. the bearing drys out and the pulley gets louder than normall.most time it an idler pulley.
good luck chris
