Hi, the first check you will want to preform will be on the gas gauge fuse in the fuse box that is located under the dash board on the drivers side on the left by the emergency brake. just above. the compartment will have a plastic door that is easily released. the fuse box diagram is located in your user manual and as well as on the inside of the fuse door. check the gas gauge fuse. if its blown, simply replace it.

OK, if the fuse is good, the problem will be within the sending unit that is located inside the gas tank. its a floater unit. replace this and it will fix your issue.

Please rate and god bless:)

Well, it depends on if you are doing it yourself or the mechanic option is what you are looking for.

The garage will charge you a bit extra for labor. its usually 50 an hour and , the unit itself will cost about 30 to 55 bucks tops. i would say about around a 100 to 190 bucks for the repair at a shop. Would you like some trouble shooting steps??

Ok, this could be just a bad ground or a simple wiring issue. i would use this guide before you purchase the repair. the guide is a step by step read and it will help you decide what to do.

    Step1
Ensure that all of the wire connections are clean, secure and corrosion-free.

    Step2
    Check your fuel
gauge fuse if the gauge's indicator stays on empty when your turn on
the ignition. If the fuse is good, join the sending unit connector to
ground. Replace the sending unit if the gauge indicator moves to the
    full line.

    Step3
Ground the terminal located on the back of the fuel gauge
with a jumper wire if the indicator doesn't move. If it does move,
consider replacing the wire between the fuel gauge and the sending
unit. A poor ground is frequently responsible for fuel gauge problems.

    Step4
Release the wire that connects to the fuel tank's
sending unit. Confirm that there's no worn insulation that would permit
wire contact to the body or frame. A fuel gauge reading of full
generally indicates a problem with the tank unit, not the wiring.

More than likely, this is a tank sending unit failure and, it will have to be replaced.

OK, in this case, i would have the wires in between the gauge and the sending unit replaced and i would replace the sending unit as well. this will fix the sending unit and it will prevent any future issue with wiring as well. The sending unit itself is the main issue here but, it wouldn't hurt to replace the wires and connectors just to be safe.

The unit is located inside of the tank and you will have to raise the car and lower the tank to retrieve it. the wires are easily accessed while the car is raised as well.

The instrument cluster on my 2003 Chevy Cavalier has been gradualy going out over the past year. first the temp gauge stopped working, then the speedo would read higher than actual speed and now it is dead...

I can't understand how the bad cluster would prevent you from fueling. The instrument cluster can be repaired. Look up specmo.com . I had mine repaired there. Quick turnaround. Previous to using Specmo, I tried Two parts from salvage yard and both turned out to be bad. Dealer wanted about $500 to do the repair. I did removal and install, Specmo repaired my cluster for around $125.
