All the vital engine components need to be running smoothly. If you break the timing belt/chain while the engine is running there is a possibility that you could mess up the valves, lifters, bend rockers, and all kinds of other things. If you see that the belt/chain needs to be replaced, or your coming up on the recommended mileage, do it. It could save you a lot of headache and money down the road. And while your doing the belt its a good idea to go ahead and change the water pump and other components while your doing it because you will be in that general area anyways.

My wife's 2001 Hyundai sonata throw a timingbelt last night . did it hurt anything or can I just put a new timingbelt on it ? it's a 4 cyc. DOHC FI if this helps . Thanks for your input ..

it depends on sheer luck
Whether you have bent a piston rod or not.
I don't know how you work out if the piston rods are ok.
You may need a mechanic to assess if any damage has occurred.

Also the bearing may be worn out that the timing belt runs on.

On one of my cars I owned a Magna. I got the timing belt replaced well over the recommended 100,000 Km and all the bearings were worn out and the belt was close to breaking .

Timing belt idler pull-up broke replaced with kit witch inc.waterpump, idle pull-up,tension pully and belt.linned up marks turns over but won't crank

You aren't giving us details on the vehicle. What is the manufacturer, year, model and engine size? It is possible that when the timing belt broke that there was internal damage done to the engine as many are interference engines, meaning that if the timing belt breaks the pistons and valves will collide, causing bent valves and/or broken pistons. This will cause loss of compression and a no-start condition. Assuming you have the belt installed properly, check the engine compression. If it is low, then you'll know you trashed the innards and will need to disassemble and repair the damaged parts.

I was driving my 1991 honda accord an timing belt broke iam woorried that it might have damaged engine what should i look for i was going to replace belt an try to get back running any advice thanks

Honda engines are what they call interference engines. This means when a timing belt breaks, the pistons hit the valves and bend them. You will need to remove the cylinder head and get the bent valves replaced if you want it to run correctly. Impossible to know how many valves are bent, depends on how fast the engine was turning when the belt broke.

Timming belt broke what to do

Your engine is probably trashed. That old saying "Don't fix it if it ain't broken" does not apply to timing belts. When your timing belt breaks, the valves on the top of your engine stop moving but the pistons on the lower have of the engine keep moving. The pistons will slam into the valves that are still open and basically destroy your engine. This is a very expensive repair for an older car, so only fix it if you REALLY love your car and you just can't let it go. Otherwise, put it up for sale on craigslist and you will probably find some enthusiast that will buy it from you.

When timing belt goes dose it reck valves. do they hit the piston.

Best Answer - Chosen by Voters Basically the timing belt connects the crankshaft with the two camshafts. This allows the valves to open allowing air into the engine at the right time. If the belt breaks then the crankshaft along with the piston and rod assembly will still move but the valves will be still. This can cause the piston to collide with the valves which can cause damage to the pistons, valves, and the entire head in some cases. There is a chance of nothing getting damage though. There are interference and free-wheeling engines. The difference is that free-wheeling engines has a space between the top of the piston and the bottom of the valve so if the belt did break then the valve would not hit the top of the piston

Will a broken timing belt and water pump require replacement of engine head valves 1 and 3?

If this is 2.0 liter duel over head cam than engine damage most likely will happen if the timing belt brakes sorry about the bad news .

Broken Timing belt

this is an interference motor, if cranked the valves will come into contact with the piston and cause major damage. Its very possible that valves may have bent(worst case). Have the belt replaced and engine pressure tested. Hopefully its not the worst case.
