Transmission knocks itself out of gear

6 posts just to tranny
back up one , and see my answer.
what engine is in the jeep, Gas or Diesel.???????
what country? (diff, countries use different parts, by law or demand)
and what transmission options 4wd or AWD.?????
Please do say what knocks means.
check fuses yet, or tranny ATF fluid levels yet , not by guess? but by doing the steps for the A/T level checks, btw , its not done like the engine method at ALL.

here is a list of tranny squawks.(beefs, symptoms)
btw2 the FSM has a huge list of possible symptoms, ever seen and FSM, ? if not why not look there. it has a chapter called.
alldata.com has that too. read it. then ask questions.
ON CAR transmissing checks, diagnosis and repairs.
1: levels. (fluids) is it pink ,red, brown or black color. or silver flakes?
2: fuses. all.
3: TCM/PCM error codes. DTC'S errors. yes, scan it, i see you did.
4: tranny pump test. (FSM)
5: stall test. does the FSM stall tests pass , ?? takes 5min work (ask)
6: is the transmission filter clean? (yes, service does extend tranny life)
(ill stop here)
there is a start. we start there, then go further,
if really motivated, you can watch Duane's 10 hour Jeep tranny rebuild video. (ask)

there are a huge list of possible A/T errors. and issues.
from shifter dont move. (stuck in park) loose shifter, or?
stuck in any gear .
skips gears. (limphome does that)
car dont move.
won't upshift.
tranny slips. in any gear (aka: flares.)
will not down shift proper.
makes noises.
Vibrations.
shudders.
gets too hot.
the list really, is near endless.
does trans fail hot and cold engine or both?
is it leaking ATF.

most owner do not want to do the FSM tests
is that you?
you have 2 choices, RTM read the FSM do the tests
or take it in.
it is your choice.

what i do is make sure the TCM (function) signals are
good to the Tranny solenoids.
if yes, then the tranny is bad.
if tranny is bad, some can be fixed on car.
some even have bottom VB solenoids, that can be replaced on car
some Jeeps , this is near impossible.
i can show ,you the rebuild video showing that.
but why? are you going to do that?

conclusion?
i think you mean the transmission FLARES.
or (jumps to a false neutral)
If you allow it to do that , it will burn up clutch packs fast.
the more you do that , the worse the damage and parts needed.
the reasons for FLARE are: (at the least)
1: TCM make and error (or loose corroded wire ) .
2: the Shift solenoids failed.
3: that gears clutch pack is damaged.
4: low pump pressure. (or internal leaks or bad pressure reg )

Jeep will not go over 60-65 on expressway, also makes a lot of noise in reverse?

the noise sounds like it is the tranny but the 60 or 65 could be the passing gear not working right or could be the tranny

Making noise like gear is rubbing something in 5th gear only. It starts & stops with every gear rotation

Drain the oil out of your manual tranny into a CLEAN bucket. Run your fingers through it. Does it look like you've got splotches of silver paint? If so, your tranny's bearings and/or gears may be wearing out.

93 Jeep Grand Cherokee only revs when put in gear.

Three ways to check:
first: check if the shift cable is in position, cick down cable too..
-next: check if the torque converter is connected to the engine.
- remove the oil pan from the auto trans and check if the oil filter is in place. If you look to the right front side of the tranny, you see a lid with a coil spring in it. check if the spring is ok.
- if tranny is open, check for metal pieces or clutch material in the oil pan and the filter unit. If you find more than usual, replace the transmission.

1997 ford expo makes loud clasking noise

If it was your cranshaft making that kind of noise.your motor would have frozen up already.it seems more like a tranny problem than an engine problem. Take it to a good mechanic. It sounds like your tranny is about to go.

1998 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LIMITED TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS

Check the condition of the tranny oil on the dipstick. If it's black and smelly, the tranny clutches might be worn out. Make sure you have enough fluid in there first. Check the fluid with the car engine running and the tranny in park. The level should be between the 2 marks.

Can't transfer to 4L or neutral mode

Transfer cases can be quirky. I've got a 91 Wrangler, an 86 Cherokee and a 75 Blazer. When I go from 2WD to 4WD, they each have their own personality.

There are a number of things I've learned to persuade a stubborn xfer case to shift.

Try mixing these :
  • Engine running, vehicle not moving
  • Engine off, Shift Xfer case, Restart
  • Tranny in neutral
  • Shift Xfer case 'N', Tranny in gear, Tranny in neutral, Xfer case to 4HI or 4LOW (as long as you feel it register), Tranny in gear, try to move
  • Shift Tranny to Reverse, roll a few yards
  • Lock/Unlock the Hubs
To get back to 2WD:
  • Drive for a few feet in a straight line
  • Unlock the hubs
  • Tranny Neutral
  • Shift xfer case
Let me know how it turns out.
