My gas gauge doesn't work either. It goes from full to empty randomly even when I have a full tank. I have to guess how much gas I have, so I keep it full most of the time. I'd like to know the exact amount because I let people use my car and I have no idea if I'm going to run out of gas or not when I go somewhere.

i never had a problem with the gas gauge until i had the trans. solenoid replaced on my 01 impala. now, the gas gauge moves from empty to full upon starting, and if i let it idle i think it shows the appropriate amount of gas in the car. But when i start driving accelerating makes the gas gauge go up and braking makes it go down. after that i have had all kinds of problems with the car... winshield wipers only working on the highest setting, overheating to the point where i drive around with my defroster on even in 80degree weather, and numerous other problems that seem to be tied to the trans.

Why does the gas guage not register how much gas is in the tank of our 2001 Chevy Impala?

This could be due to a faulty fuel sensor in the fuel tank try draining the fuel tank and replacing the sensor.

A 2001 F250 reg cag 5.4 4x4. The trck sat for almost 2 years. Now the gas gage goes to and stays at full with key on and drops to empty with key off as it should. I am thinking a ground issu but cant find...

When you ground the sending unit wire gauge will go to full you have a short to ground on this circuit yellow and white wire from the tank to the gauge or the sender is shorted out

2001 chevy impala gas gage does not work right

sokol520--Sounds like fuel pump/fuel guage sending unit. They are integrated and located inside the fuel tank, most likely.

Fuel gage goes to zero and then to full while driving

Sounds like the sending unit is bad, which is in the gas tank.

Cant put much gas in tank w/o it coming back out

It souds like the air return line from the fuel filler pipe is plugged. When you fill up the car the air has to escape from the tank or else the fuel backs up into the filler neck shutting off the fuel nozzle. The air pipe is housed in the fuel filler pipe and lets the air escape as the fuel is going into the tank. Remove the filler neck and inspect air bypass line to see if it is kinked or plugged.
