Question about Chevrolet 1500

Won't go into reverse, stripped gear?

Yesterday I was driving on the freeway and had to do a lot of quick accelerating, now my truck will not click into the reverse gear and will not reverse, if it is on a decline it will go a little ways due to momentum, but that is it, when i push on the gas (in reverse) it does nothing but rev the engine. I checked the automatic transmission fluid, but it seems like there is enough, although I cannot figure out how to put more in if I need to. The coolant seems like it could use a little top off but the truck has not seemed to be overheating...I think I may have stripped the gear by trying to make the truck accelerate faster than it could on the freeway? Not sure how to fix this problem or if I will have to take it to a shop to get fixed. I would like to fix it myself if I can. Help please.

faster than it should? I don't know, it's manual, and i was probably doing a little pedal to the metal. The shifter moves into position fine, the vehicle just will not move backwards when reverse is engaged. The lever moves into the proper positions. It is a 1997 Chevrolet 1500 c\/k truck. Thanks!

oh ****, I'm a jacka** I mean it is an AUTOMATIC....I don't know why I said manual in that last post...I have been researching other cars all day too so maybe that is why. is an automatic for sure.

If its a stickshift, why did in your original post say that you checked the automatic trans fluid? It is my feeling that either you have a clutch or internal trans problem (likely trans) This repair, regardless of how small is best left to professionals who can identify and repair a transmission as well as re-fill the fluid when the job is completed..

First, you mentioned trying to make it go faster than it should...Were you manually shifting into lower gears?
Next, you mentioned that it is not "clicking into reverse" Is there a problem actually moving the shifter into that position? Or, does it just not go backwards when reverse is engaged?
When you move the shifter, is the lever on the transmission moving into the proper positions. My answer will depend upon these things.

Transmission fluid fill should be on the right hand side of the engine by the firewall. You did not state what year your vehicle is, or transmission type, but if it isn't the fluid, then change the filter & see if that solves the problem, otherwise it it probably the low/reverse band if early vehicle & expensive fix. Then I would check the shift linkage first since its not an automatic. And.........the fill hole is not in the engine compartment.

Hey, its OK, read my original post. since this is a newer transmission, It's probably bad, but have it checked at the transmission shop.

Reverse seems faster than forward

Reverse gear is geared more for low end acceleration, but not speed...forward gear will not wind out so quick...this is normal.

Tried to get on the freeway in my 2002 lincoln ls gave the car more gas to speed up and transmission did not responed. pulled over and now the car won't move. when I put it in drive I can feel it

check your transmission fluid level. It is better not to force it just load it to a recovery service track and take it to a qualified garage where they will check the pressure and serviceability of your automatic gear box. Looks like you have a problem with the gear box, is slipping on acceleration.
