Wont turn over when key is turned

Have a '97 jeep cherokee with a 4.0 when i turn the key theres nothing. I pulled the starter and had it tested cleaned the battery terminals, checked the grounds, all wiring etc... and still nothing.even replaced the battery. If its not the battery, the silinoid, the starter. what else would make it not turn over. the jeep was running fine when parked and was well maintained so i refuse to believe the motor is locked up

I had one with the same problem. It turned out to be the nuetral saftey switch. If you jiggle the shifter you may be able to get it to fire, if you you need to get a new saftey switch, (250$) or put a bypass button in, which is what i did for about 4.50$

Try running a hot wire to your starter solenoid trigger terminal.

There is a wire with a momentary switch on it so that you can crank the engine from under the hood. This is available at most part stores.

This will bypass if you have an ignition switch problem or a blown fuse.

There is not much to this system. Power to solenoid that transfers to the starter, solenoid trigger wire, and the body of the starter is grounded.

Could be the key switch, could be a fuse, could be wires to solenoid. Check condition of battery cables, both power and ground.
When you turn the key to start, do the lights dim?
When you turn the key does it make any sound at all?
Do you have a volt meter?
is there voltage to the solenoid?
Does the battery voltage drop when you attempt to start?
Is there voltage at the starter?
Does it have an alarm with a disable function?
Try starting in (N)eutral rather than (P)ark. (Neutral Safety Switch)

If you can turn the engine by hand, it has not locked. If it did, you would get an engagement noise from starter, but it would not turn. I'd look at the neutral safety switch (automatic) or clutch switch (stick vehicles) and ignition switch, starter relay (usually in the power distribution box near the battery) Also any related fuses for start system if in there.Likely you will find that no power is getting to the small wire on the starter solenoid.

I would recommend that you check the starter relay. It is not uncommon for these to go out. It is an easy fix, and does not cost a lot either.

My 1998 jeep cherokee wont crank or start whats wrong? i replaced the battery and still wont crank over but all lights and electrical work

sounds like it is the starter or ignition switch. To shade tree test the starter you can jump it out with a screwdriver, this is sort of tricky if you have never done it before. Someone will need to turn the key and then you take the screwdriver and tap the posts on the starter, if will arc the screwdriver., but start the vehicle. You can also pull the starter out and have it tested. The see if it is the ignition switch you will need to trace out the wires and make sure they are all working correctly. Good Luck Tim

Bad solenoid i would guess. Not making a connection there. Any basic wiring and ignition switch problems should be alleviated by jumping the starter with a screwdriver. I would check the solenoid and starter brushes

2000 jeep grand cherokee wont start...all i get is a click sound from the starter... wanna make sure it is the starter before i go replacing it...tried wiggling wires

Used a test light at starter, on small wire check for voltage while some one turn key to start.if you do have voltage there starter bad . Replace it. If you need to move truck tap starter with hammar while some one turn key to start.Remember you'll still need to replace starter.

Not cranking

There is a relay in the power distribution box near the battery. Check that. Also, check the block connections on battery leads for clean secure connection. Small wire on starter should have 12v there when cranking (or key turned to start. If power is there and no crank, starter is bad. Last resort, check ignition switch for power in/out.(rare but they do go bad)

1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport wont start

Try this first. With one of you under the car whack the starter with a hammer as the other of you turns the key t the start position and holds it there. No wimpy whacks here give it one or two good ones. If it is a bad starter it may start this way. If it does, a new starter motor is in your future. Very easy to change on a Jeep. If it doesn't work let me know and we will go further.

1994 Jeep Cherokee will not start or even crank

I had the same problem with my 94 jeep and i ended up finding out what was causing the problem was the starter relay in the fuse box under hood, i believe its the second or third relay. Try turning the key to the start position and leave it there and poop open ur hood and manuelly start the relay
