Question about Daihatsu Charade

Won't start, weak spark, maybe fuel as well?

Hi, its a 1985 charade 3cly. It just died one day and now it won't start. It seems to have weak spark and maybe a fuel issue. i have by passed the ballest resitor to little or no differance, and when i tryed a couple of spare coils i have (msd blaster) they wouldn't spark at all! would the no spark from the sfter maket coils be because there for electronic ingnition and the charade is points? Thanks for any help you can give :)

Are you sure you have a ballest resistor ?
if it is the condensor you disconnected then you just took the storage unit for the piont duration out the circut and this would make fire from any coil almost impossible to see .
the points open to discharge the condensor and the in turn sent the voltage to the coil. the ballast resistor reduces voltage to the points to keep them from burnig up to fast. check voltage to coil with volt meter on the + side.
also you can check circut with a test light.
hook wire lead from test light to the points base screw. or the negitive terminal of coil if point are not easy to get to.
place probe end on the pos side of coil and crank over by hand
or bump starter. you shoud se the test light flash on aND OFF FOR EVERY CYCLINDER IT FIRES.

Weak spark is no fuel issue but sign of distributor problems. seen age you still have contact points and conventional distributor cap.
Check contacts points and contact gap, feeler gauge will be enough at maximum opening when turned around. Incorrect issue is no weal spark issue either. Cracks in the cap are or worn points or dirty lead. Then the ignition coil should be good still. der-ust, clean up all contacts/terminals. Clean grease and other debris as well. If points or cap no good, replace points may be cleaned a bit carefully with sanding paper (Did that only on 1000 imported japanese cars from mayor port as a student to drive them to a parking lot.)

Timing can be set by a stoboscopic light for proper pre-ignition
you need one of those dwell angle strob light instruments.

Whole other list possible while it will not run. Battery ok?
Vacuum to distributor ok. Distributor weights not stuck?
Start to clean all and check from A to Z basic stuff. Can't be anything serious. Serious when you have grey emulsion in stead of oil.

Maybe it's not running lean. Maybe it's misfiring. Since you put in new fuel parts and that didn't help, maybe there is an ignition component that fails when it gets hot. A bad coil can do this, also the igniter-rarely, admittedly, but you could have it tested. When it stalls and won't start, if you check for spark and find none, it would confirm an ignition problem.

I have a 86 camaro 2.8L run good till it gets warm then die's won't start again till it cools. getting fuel and spark.


I have a 1985 Camaro and if the switch for the fan is off then it overheats. There is a fan that can be installed. My switch is on the left of my steering wheel. Tune up is always good. Have your alternator checked, if it's old can be a problem maybe. New spark plugs can't go wrong. Good Luck!!!

Won't start


Check the fuel injectors, with the key on one side of the two wire connector will have battery voltage, if none is present then check the ECM fuses in the underhood fuel box.

1985 corvette cranks but won't start, fuel pressure good, oil is good also, it doesn't seem to be geeting any fuel. New fuel pump, filter & gas. Is there a security aystem problem?


Check to see if you have spark, if you do, and still it does not start, then you may think that fuel is not getting to it. At this point, use some starting fluid and spray it at the throttle opening. That should start it for a few seconds and give you the answer.

It won't die when pulling the relay because it has another power path to the fuel pump through the oil pressure switch . Fuel Pump Electrical Circuits Description and Operation watch this video on fuel pump control , shows chrysler first , ford ,then gm . wait for gm an he explains the oil pressure switch . Plus when it won't start ,don't guess or theorize ! Test what's missing ? check for spark , no spark check ignition system , coil's , ignition module , crank sensor etc... has spark ,do a fuel pressure test etc... don't think computer , when it won't start does the check engine light come on with the key on run not start . If light is lit ,nothing wrong with the cumputer . If want to fix cars you really should take some automotive classes . Test don't guess .Watch some other videos crank no start videos etc...
