Hi. this job will not be easy and it is recommended that you also change the water pump as well during this timing chain replacement. You will have to remove the water pump to get to the chain and, the water pump gasket/seal will be compromised during the removal so, this is why it is recommended to replace it as well while you are exchanging the timing chain.

This can be done if you are filmiluer with your vehicles engine but, it will be challenging if you are a first timer.

Please rate and god bless:)

Does a 2002 caliver with a 2.2 engine have a timming belt or does it have a chain

It has a chain. Or it actually has two chains. One is for the cam, and is the timing chain. And the other chain goes to the balance shaft. Many parts suppliers offer timing kits with the chain, and tensioners. These allow you to change all the necessary parts if you need to do a timing chain replacement.

We took the head off an found that the valves are hitting the pistons on my 1997 chevy cavalier 2.2

Only way that can happen is if the timing belt/chain has failed and the cam and crank are no longer in phase with each other.

What are symptoms that you need a new timing belt?

basically the same as if you needed a tune up. backfires, sluggish, hard to start, won't start now power.etc. Of course it could be something else like plugs, wires, fuel filter, fuel pump, sensor, etc. Usually you end up replacing everything else and then you find out it is the timing belt/chain. You can always use a timing light to see if it is out of time, as sometimes if is slips you con adjust the distributor. Hope this helped Tim

Replaced the water pump on 1997 chevy cavalier and now it runs like **** think it needs to be retimed

Yup, sounds like your on the right track to me. Don't run it this way for long, it could cause valve damage. Go to the local parts store and get the book and reset the timming.
