Question about 2001 GMC Jimmy

1 Answer

Wont start no fuel pressure

I have a 2001 GMC jimmy I know that they are notorious for fuel pump failure. It wont start and the fuel pressure seemed to be low when I poped the shrader valve on the rail. That doesnt mean that fuel regulator valve is bad either or does it? I am looking for some advice before I break out the hanes manual and start surgery.

This vehicle needs 60 lbs of fuel pressure to make the popit type fuel injectors to open you need to check with pressure gauge

you say it won`t start unless primed I take it you have to supply a fuel source. if so check fuel pressure as the pump maybe failing.

check the fuel pump relay, some gm vehicles default to the oil pressure switch if the FPR fails.

Will turn over but it wont start

What is the fuel pressure? these trucks need a certain amount of pressure to start, if low just 3psi it will not start, if you are sure the pump is good then you may bad spider injector. check fuel pressure first and also try spraying starting fluid into throttle body and see if truck starts. the pump needs 60 -66 psi to start the truck.

2000 GMC JIMMY What controls turning on fuel pump

The pump is powered by the relay. The relay is grounded by the computer. It gets a ground signal for the first 3 seconds, then only if the computer sees oil pressure or RPM to know the engine is running.
You should be able to ground the relay and run the pump for several minutes. After 30 seconds you should be at max pressure.
Normal pressure is 15psi for a truck that has throttle body injectors such as a mid 80s model, and 65psi for trucks that have port fuel injection like yours.
You may have the wrong pump.

98 jimmy starts... but then dies and will not start back up untill later, changed fuel filter

Have you checked your fuel pressure. You may have a bad fuel pump. If you have good fuel pressure take a good look at your cap and rotor. 4.3 liters have a notorious cap and rotor problem along with a coil wire issue. The coil wire can rub on the firewall or other places and cause you problems. I would start with checking your fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gauge.

2001 Jimmy 208000 miles now needing a fourth fuel pump! WHY

If you drive it very fast/very slow, the pump may have a hard time keeping up with the engine/have too much backpressure. You might have the mechanic who is replacing the fuel pump check the wiring for shorts leading up to/away from the fuel pump. The latter seems likely to me, but you never know. Again with the pressure, they may have the pressure set to high on all three replacements.

the fuel pressure if leaking could cause this the regulator is located under the intake plenum but you should smell gas .if you dont then most likely the pump is bad ,the pump will come on for 2 seconds when the key is on then go off it will not stay on with just the key on only when you crank it will it .so have your fuel pressure checked with a gauge.

Pump needs replaced, Your shop should have chk. this when it was there the first time. Did they by chance chg. the fuel filter, that can hinder it from starting too.
