Backfiring through the carb is a timing problem. I would bring it back up to top dead center and reinstall the distributer. Also double check your firing order on your plug wires.

'till you do some in depth testing of all systems, I'd place equal weight on every possibility. Make sure you cover the basics like fuel filter etc before getting crazy with it though. Also check cap. rotor, coil and wires. Idle cylinder pressure is different than that encountered when driving. This additional pressure will cause ignition spark to seek a better easier ground,(not the spark plugs where it should be going) causing missing under load.After checking , if you haven't found anything, its time to begin testing fuel pump pressures, modules and controls.

first of all you have no carb its fuel injected, at least you know you have spark, now do you have fuel pressure??, is the fuel pump working?/ if you have fuel and pressure then you have to check signal at the injectors, so if you have fuel pressure and a good injector pulse the next step is to check the injectors, this may require removal, good luck

A fairly straight forward answer provided by another... just pasted here... word of caution with his method... BE CAEFULL OF MOVING PARTS.. also disconnect the coil so you dont get bit :-)


You will need to know; firing order, #1 cylinder location, and have a assistant. Get a basic repair manual from library to look up these things. Remove #1 spark plug from engine. Place your thumb over the hole. Have assistant crank engine over until compression is felt on your thumb; this is close to TDC or top dead center. Grab onto belt and nudge engine over until timing pointer is aligned with O or TDC on engine dampner. This is near perfect TDC. Now take and insert distributor into engine so that the #1 spark plug wire terminal on the distributor cap aligns with the rotor inside distributor. If it does not pull up distributor and reinsert till it does. Tighten everything and it should fire right up. Now you can fine tune with a timing light.

In all my experience, if you know how to correctly tune a edelbrock then go with that, but, holley has outstanding carbs that can muster up to an output of 1,200hp. it would be much cheaper to et a rebuild kit from say, o'reillys, 20-45 dollars depending on which one you have.
I have a 1985 Bronco 351w 4x4, i just rebuilt my holley and she runs smooth

This is a lengthy string ... but might be useful. It goes over all sorts of things ...
stumped carb backfire uphill at higher RPM
But one of the guy's issue with the new 4bbl carb was that his floor mat under the accelerator pedal limited just how far open the second set of bbls could open so he had loss of power at higher speeds.

If its a (holley) motorcraft 2 bbl carb sounds like the power valve. They typically blow out whenever the engine backfires or they just wear out after time and flood the idle circuit.

fuel filter or fuel pump problem or it could be the automatic choke is closed and choking motor make sure choke is plugged in on side of carb start car let it warm up with air breather off watch and see if choke opens up .also you can look down into carb when motoe running crack open throttle and see if it sprays gas into intake if it doesnt could be filter or pump. to check fuel pump remove fuel line from carb insert line into small can or bottle so fuel doesnt run ontop of motor and have someone just bump over starter and see if it pushes fuel out line with a descent amount of pressure check fuel filter.and if all that checks out try looking for vaccum line off to check get a can of either and squirt lightly around vaccum lines and listen for car to idle up if it does bad vaccum line. and also check distributer. but it sounds like it is getting to much gas so i would check choke first..... hope that helps .. and by the way you have a 351 modified 400 wich is 351 m 400.
