When I try to fill gas the gas pump keeps stopping even if teh tank is empty. I have to keep turning the gas pump on every 10 seconds. It taskes me 30 minutes to put 5 galons of gas

try the next pump, learn that all machines can and do fail.
does 2k mean year 2000? as in Y2k?
on real cars (street legal) the gas filler system can fail;.
modern cars have breather tube to the top of the tank so the gas pump does not trip.
if second island pump fails try another gas station.
if still fails get the filler next hoses all tested out for bent hoses.

all my motors cycles trip, due to no vent there. to stop the trip
so all MC guys know this and take the silly filler hose see that accordion thing in the end and we collapse it fully and fill the tank just like we did in 1920, or ford MODEL A days. ever drive one , same thing.
this trick cause stinky vapors, to rise.
and zero back pressure and no trip possible doing so.

more like fuel pump damaged. gasoline keeps fuel pump cool and lubricated if fuel tank run empty fuel pump will over heat which will destroy it. never run out of gas.fuel filter will get plugged with debris from fuel tank when tank runs empty all sediment botton tank will break up stop up fuel filter.

you never want to run your car completely empty,, the sludge and floating **** sits usually at the bottom of the tank and will clog everything,, injectors, fuel filters, and even at times the gas pickup inside the tank itself. if It was mine, I would change the filter first of all, then,, (when this happens) just turn the key to the on position, listen for a slight clicking noise,, that would be your fuel pump trying to bring gas to the right place. it takes time since it has to fill the lines and as you see recycles the air out of the line. turn the key off and do it again,, once the sound is gone, try starting it,,

i think the pipe from the pump to the sender outlet pipe in teh tank has perished

check the filler neck. the hose may have a kink in it. also check the return line it may be pluged.

The 99 expedition comes with a 26 gal tank as standard equip. and there is an optional 30 gal available. I suspect the gas pump you used is not accurate, and needs to be recalibrated. I think it's just a coincidence that the gauge is acting up now. Hopefully I'm wrong, and by some miracle you actually are now getting 300 miles on a half tank of gas! You may have a bad sending unit, this would result in inaccurate fuel tank readings.

yep i seen it in happen .i was at a gas station a guy drove car to the gas station on empty.he fill his tank up .could not get it to crank .some cars you have to restart fuel pump when run out of gas. like chrysler.you use a scanner. but chervrolet you run low over heat damage the pump.it has to stay submerge gas to keep it cool. check fuel pump pressure.it should be 41 - 47 psi.

I am having the same problem. When turning the pump on full speed it will pump for a few seconds before kicking the pump off like the tank is full even though there is no gas in the tank. I can pump gas if I barely start the pump and hold it by hand but very very slowly so it takes about 20 minutes to fill up. Its not the gas station or the way I am holding the nozzle as I have stopped 20 different places and tried every way imaginable to hold the nozzle. I have changed the filler neck, charcoal canister, and the sensor/filter that is on the side of it that I believe opens to allow fuel vapor to escape and let pressure off the tank when the truck is not running... still no luck. When I had the fuel next off there is a check valve that is made into the top next part of the tank that is spring loaded. I figured this was to keep gas from running back out in the event of a rollover and possibly keep someone from putting a hose down the next and stealing gas. At this point that is the only thing that could possibly be causing the pump to contiune to kick off every few seconds when filling up the tank. Next is to change the tank I suppose unless someone has already ran into this issue and can tell me what I need to do to fix the problem.

not sure it should happen that fast but it may.... buy yourself a couple bottles of gas line antifreeze and put them in the gas tank... sounds like you have a lil water problem ... this stuff is basically alcohol (not the kind you drink) and it will suck up the water.
