Changing an ignition switch on a 95 mercury cougar

    Is it the ignition switch itself or just the LOCK ASSEMBLY as mentioned by buffalowbill.

    We need to know a couple of things 1- is the key working and 2-is it a tilt or non tilt wheel. If the key is not working, steering wheel must be removed in the process. Rick

Turn the key to the acessory position. then poke a pin or something small into the little hole on the switch. then keep turning the key toward you untill it stops again and pull it out.

put a blow dryer on the distributaor cap and spark plug wires. somehow moisture is getting under your cap. it should start almost immediatly after you start drying it with your blow dryer

Have been having issues for a month or so with 95 Cougar not starting on first try...double-check that car is in park, etc....eventually will start. Yesterday ignition made a 'pop' then started, but now...

sounds like there is a relay for ignition stuck on. As I'm unfamiliar with your particular car, I'm sorry that I can't help further. It is possible that the relay had a poor contact, hence not starting, then it has welded itself together due to the poor contact, hence not switching ignition off...hope this helps

If you open trunk and look on inside of trunk where hinge bolts are you will see code numbers . Owners manual will tell you how.

Ignition switch

Remove the 3 screws form the steering column lower shroud.
Then remove the 2 screws from the ignition switch and remove.
