Stalling and not starting 89 buick century

My car is an 89 buick century. I've had it about 4 months. It ran pretty good when I got it then the battery went dead. Got a new battery in and then it started stalling out. Sometimes it would run sometimes it kept stalling. Seemed to run better on the interstate than on regular roads at lower speeds. Could smell burning rubber real strong at the beginning. Still smell it but not nearly as much. Took it to a shop and they said nothing was wrong with it. Got to where it was extremely hard to start but once it ran for awhile it did ok. Then it was hard to start and had a really hard time getting it to go, would stall out as soon as put it in gear and stepped on gas, had to peel off to make it go, then it would stall when you stepped on the brake, stopped at sign or light or turned a corner. Then got real hard to start after stalling, would start to overheat a bit. Now it's in the drive. Auto Zone guy looked under the hood said it was a starter, he couldn't check sensor, too old of a car. Another auto zone guy said it wasn't the fuel pump because if it was it wouldn't have ran good on the interstate. Somedays it wouldn't run hardly at all, kept stalling, the next day it could run fine, some said it was the fuel filter or sensor. Can anyone tell me what's wrong with the thing??? I need to get it fixed and don't have an extra $65 to have the garage look at it and diagnosis it. It only has 71,000 miles on it.

    Ended up the stalling was due to bad spark plugs and wires in case anyone else runs into the same problem. The starter is starting to go too though. And it needed an air filter.

    I have a 1989 Buick Century and it was running great but two weeks after I bought it it started stalling and backfiring. If I got it past the stalling out it would run ok but then if I had to start it was wanting to stall I could hardly get it up to 5 mph then after I kept going on and off the gas it would all of a sudden pick up speed and run ok . After a while I could not get it to take off any more. I could barely get it up to 5mph again and it would backfire and die out. I had the modulator changed and it is getting fuel. What can this be????? Please help.

First thing, is your chk. engine light on? if it is, you can chk. the codes yourself, get a paper clip unfold it so you got 2 strate ends, find your dianostics port where you plug in the sccanner, take the paper clip and stick one end into the one on the far right and the other to the one next to it and turn ignition key to on position, chk. engine should start blinking if not move the last end of paper clip you pluged in to next one in port until it does( turning key off each time before you move paper clip end) do this procedure until the light starts to blink. When it blinks count the blinks, for example it will blink one time than a paus than blink twice quick witch means 12 and so on. It will start out with a 12 witch means the computer is ready to give stored codes. Just write down the codes and either take them to napa, or auto zone, or to a shop you know, and they can tell you what they mean. On a car that old it could be almost anything, parts wear out, but right now what stands out to me by your discription i would chk. the cadalitic converter it might be pluged. Take some advise get someone that knows something about cars or at least works on them on a regulator bases. That way your not playing a gessing game.

Had the same problem above, but not the burning smell. turned out to be a bad injector, could be the same with yours. The left or right bank goes out with one bad injector and car starts and stalls, progressivly gets worse and wont run.

-You mean. crank 3-4 times before it fire...?
If so. Possibly dirty injector, low fuel pressure.
-Or you mean you turn the key 3-4 time before the starter crank...?
If so. Solenoid has dirty contact or bad connector.

Have a 2000 lesabre custom with 77000 miles has a problem with stalling on occasion and sometimes is hard to start, after stalling may have to let it sit a few minutes before it will start it's been into...


We recently worked on a buick century with the same problem. we replaced the spark plugs and made sure the spark plug wires where on their tight and it ran like new. i hope this helps. BE CAREFUL AND DRIVE SAFE.

Column shift w/o tilt

Olds Ciera '89, '90

Floor shift...same options. Tilt and/or no tilt is a matter of preference as the wiring harness is the same, so either will work. Floor shift is floor shift only,'89 and '90 Ciera, Century, Celebrity, 6000.

New pump still no fuel


Its not unheard of for a pump to go bad that soon, can you hear it run when you turn the ignition to on position, if not chk. fuse and relay and all electrical connections and grounds, If it does run get a fuel pressure guage and chk. the pressure.

Give it a tune-up get the good stuff.

Three to five, good ignition components are cheaper on-line the other stuff you should get at your local auto parts store.

Buick century 1993 stalls while driving After driving for a while the car stalls out. It's dangerous because sometimes I'm on a highway. It starts immediately after that and goes a bit then stalls again....


i had the same problem with my 92 exept after mine stalled it wouldnt start for 20 - 30 mins... mine ended up needing a transmission flush for the stalling problem and i tried to drive everyday that helped

91 Buick Century 2.5 L brake light on & battery light on


For the Brake light to stay on and the fluid is up...sounds like your sensor is playing dead......

For the battery to die after only (4) hours..you have a very big drain on the battery itself.....without the vehicle right here to look at would be very hard to even guess...electrical problems are a hands on chore...
