Question about 2002 Mitsubishi Galant

1 Answer

I have an 02 Mitsubishi Galant with 115,000 miles. I have recently been having a problem with the RPMS being higher than usual, 2200-2300 at 55 mph, 3000-3100 at 80 mph. This is much higher than usual. I took it to my mechanic and also my transmission guy and they have no idea.

hi, i'm not really sure with your problem. if your problem pertains to your need to increase your rmp to attain the speed you want but the readings you have is very diffrent from the day you first bought it? is my approach right? anyway, either your car is getting heavy due to load or the power transfers are getting worn out. this includes your clutch(for manual tranny) and the auto tranny torque converters worn(including tranny itself).

for clutch system, worn clutch disk, damaged presure plates and damaged flywheel drive face; could produce slipping and eventually lead to high rpm to attain required speed.

for auto tranny system, well, oil/fluid is what makes the system work. if the vanes in the tranny including driveshaft wear could make the whole system loose power transfer efficiency.

SOURCE: 1992 Chevy Suburban rpms jump at 60+ mph

When the transmission jumps the extra RPM by 200 or 300 RPM. That's your Torque Converter Clutch lock up disengaging or it's slipping. Pull the transmission dip stick out and check the fluid level and condition of the fluid, look to see that it's not burning. If the fluid is not burning then it's the Torque converter clutch unlocking and the Throttle position Sensor may need to be readjusted, or if the transmission is still running off a TV cable. The TV cable may need to be adjusted and or the transmission filter may be dirty and needs to be changed. Take it to a transmission shop and explain to them what the transmission is doing. I'm not sure if your transmission is an 4L80 or a 4L80E. If it's the 4L80E the PCM and ECM control the lock up to your converter. If the PCM detects a problem with the transmission, it drops the transmission fluid pressure to the converter clutch. If it's a 4L80, it's controlled by the TV cable and vacuum lines to the transmission modulator. Regardless they can look in to this when they change the transmission fluid and filter. Recap: Have the Suburban's ECM scanned for any transmission DTC codes. Service the transmission if the fluid is dark in colour and burnt. Adjust any linkage to the transmission that is an issue to it's performance. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to help.

SOURCE: my integra bogs down at higher rpms

First run a tank of a strong fuel system cleaner like BG-44K. If that doesn't help, clean the throttle body. If that doesn't help, take it to a mechanic.

Galant does not shift to overdrive

I have an 02 Galant LS...I had the same problem with shifting and seemed to idle too fast. I changed out the idle air control motor located around the throttle body area. The car ran great after that. The problem is the IAC is a small plastic motor that will cost around 300 to 400 dollars. If that is the problem then buying a new rather than a used one is recommended.

I have a 2002 mistubishi galant 4 cyllinder, my check engine light it one, when i had the code pulled, it came back as the cat converter... If i drive on the freeway for 15 minutes, next time i start it...

Let the engine cool and remove the spark plugs.Examine them.Check the gap on them.If they have over fifteen thousandths of an inch greater gap than spec. says, they probably have a lot of miles and need replaced anyway.
If over 100,000 miles or nearly so,replace the spark plug wiring too.don-ohio

Going about 20 mph rpms will jump it acts like it is in neutral its an 02 mitsubshi lancer es with about 154000 miles its done this same thing just at a higher speed it would do this then it quit doing it...

Have the transmission seviced. check the condition of the old fluid. if it smells burnt you may need ferther repairs, but try just having it serviced or flushed first you may be able to save yourself a very expensive repair.

My galant's power steering only works at higher rpm

sounds like the pump is going out, check fluid, check belt, usually when u have to run at high rpm like that sounds like the pump is weak, higher rpms turns pump faster making fluid run through quicker, slower rpm fluid not pumping enough fluid to keep pump working, i believe you need power steering pump, if it goes ot while driving, it would be like driving a car from the 40 or 50s. hard to turn, you may even cause a wreck, you could get hurt or somebody else
