Question about 1993 Cadillac DeVille

1 Answer

Drained battery If car sat for longer than 2 days, would need to be jumped off.Changed the battery. For awhile as long as I drove it everyday had no problems. Eventually, the jumps became more frequent and the battery would not hold a charge. Replaced altenator and drive belt and charged battery. Battery would last for about 3 starts and die. Just put another battery in to see how long it will last. Out of curiosity I took the old altenator and had it checked out and it was fine. What else would be cause my battery to drain and not charge? I pulled all possible fuses that would pull any power while car was parked.

No lights left on, fuses pulled on obvious and still battery drainage. Have an ammeter but not sure exactly how to use it. It's been mentioned maybe a sensor???was bad or going bad. Until I figure out and fix this problem, I am just pulling a cable off battery when I park for long periods or overnight and periodically checking power % on battery and charging if necessary.

Did you have a meter or test light connected to test for a drain in the electrical system when you removed the fuses ?

It's a small draw if it takes that long, I would start by checking the under hood lamp, they have a mercury switch which if it is not on level ground have tendency to stay on, the switches also plain and simple fail and keep the light on. Same holds true if it has a trunk lamp, and the third is the glove box lamp. The best was to check these of course is in the dark.
Typically you would remove one of the battery cables use an Ammeter in line and this would give you an amp reading if there is a draw an how much, once you have this, you can pull fuses until the draw stops. which ever fuse or disconnected item will now be exposed.

with the battery positive cable disconnected, connect the black lead to the positive post, the red to the positive connector, ammeter in the10amp range. If you are using a multimeter make sure your red test lead in in the amp socket on the meter. doing this you should get a reading on your meter.

once you have this you can start to disconnect suspected items, when you locate the offending component you will see a drop in the reading. Start with the alternator as a set of bad diodes can cause this.

2010 G37 - battery was dead - jumped it off and drove it for twenty minutes. Next morning it wouldn't start and now it wont stop clicking (like a relay). Any suggestions?

if the battery goes dead or low it must be recharged with a charger, driving the car will not recharge it properly. The alternator is only meant to maintain the battery, not recharge it. Get the battery recharged and verified and then try again.

replace the battery. once the new one is in, the charging system should be tested for ability. the system should be charging anywhere from 13.5 - 14.7volts. anything less than that, replace the alternator. not uncommon for colder temps to "snap" batteries. happy holidays

We changed the battery because nothing would come on, after changing the battery the new one died the same day, went to auto zone was told I needed a new alternator. Changed that today jumped the car and...

You may have received a faulty alternator from the store. I have bought alternators from AutoZone before and in one instance had to take it back 3 times before I got one that worked correctly. Also, you should not have jumped the car, you should have started it up on battery and alternator. That would have told you if the battery was drained or the alternator you had just put in was bad. If you put the drained battery back in the car to run it, the car would have died anyway. Whenever I have changed an alternator out I always let it run in the driveway for awhile to make sure that both the battery and alternator are functioning correctly.

Jumped the battery after car sat for awhile then

If you dont use the car it still use the battery so sounds like you need do slow trikle charge on the battrie. If that dosent work you might killed the battrie off. i dont this many time if not use it die fast.
