Question about 1992 Subaru SVX

2 Answers

I have a 92 awd subaru svx. I drove it for a full day after putting a new front end on it. Got into the car about a half hour after I pulled up to the house the car wouldn't start. Put the key in the ignition and nothin. The starter wouldn't even kick over. Almost as if there was no power. Well we jumped the starter with a wire to start the car, but it had to be in gear between reverse and neutral and it would turn over. Now instead of it being in AWD it has an indicator light that shows it is in FWD. The ignition is still messed up, it won't turn over putting the key in the ignition. I still have to turn the key and put it in gear between neutral and reverse to start the car.

Thankyou for the shifting issue. What about the ignition and the car switching itself from AWD to Front wheel drive.

If this switch is bad the starter wont turn.
Check to make sure battery cable have excellent contact with starter, you can use an ohmeter to see if starter relay is good or not. If not you won't get no power to solenoid. You can use a voltmeter to see if you are getting power to solenoid.

The circuit on newer cars with automatic transmissions has a neutral
safety, or neutral start switch installed between the ignition switch
and the starter. The ignition switch cannot operate the starter motor
unless the transmission is in park or neutral.

Late model vehicles with manual transmissions have a starter/clutch
interlock switch that requires the clutch to be depressed to the floor.

    Neutral Safety Switch

Normal operations of a neutral safety switch provides a quick check for the adjustment of the gear selector linkage.

    • To do this, move the selector slowly until it clicks into the PARK position.

    • Turn the ignition key to the START position.

    • If the starter operates, the PARK position is correct.

    • After checking the PARK position, move the lever slowly toward the
NEUTRAL position until the lever drops at the end of the NEUTRAL stop
      in the selector gate.

    • If the starter also operates at this point, the gearshift linkage is properly adjusted.

    • This quick test also tests the adjustment of the neutral safety switch.

    • If the engine does not start in either or both of these positions,
the neutral safety switch or the gear selector linkage needs adjustment
      or repair.
A voltmeter can be used to check the switch for voltage when the
ignition key is turned to the START position with the shift lever in
PARK or NEUTRAL. If there is no voltage, the switch should be adjusted
    or replaced.

Dear phugley1,

A quick diagnostic is of coarse circuit failer, check fuses, but i suspect from what you are having to do with shifter will be a relay switch within. Have tech remove and replace as needed. 17yrs wear and tear gotta repair.

cheers

It has been done before. There are change-over kits available from multiple sources. Google: Subaru SVX manual transmission conversion (or something like that). There is an outfit called Small Car something. They put Subaru powerplants in VW Vanagons...

How do i change alternator belt on 1992 subaru svx

Remove the plastic cover held on by two 10mm hexbolts. Slide cover forward (dont try to lift up).

Below the Power Steering pump is a pulley. This is the belt tensioner. With a 12mm box-end wrench, loosen pulley bolt.

There is a 12mm bolt that extends from the pulley at a right angle. Turn this bolt counter-clockwise to loosen, and clockwise to tighten. Make sure you loosen the belt enough to easily slip it off the alternator pulley. Put on new belt and reverse disassembly process.

Shift it into neutral and try. If it starts, the neutral safety switch needs to be adjusted. Some have made a starter bypass mode using a relay feeding the started directly from the battery. Check out Subaru-svx.net

fault codes for the 1992 Subaru SVX may be available through autozone.com's website if you input the year, make, model and then click the Repair Info. tab.

I cannot copy and paste the entire document to fixya.com as it is too large, and also it is copyrighted.

How hard would it be to replace the torque converter and rebuild the transmission in a subaru svx awd

This is a task for a specialist transmission repairer. Don't attempt this yourself unless you want an expensive mess on your hands.

Seek out a competent transmission specialist that is familiar with these transmissions. However I would suggest you get some quotes for a replacement rebuilt unit on a change over basis. This can be fitted in a day and your vehicle will not be out of service for long.
