Check teeth on flywheel and check crankshaft for excessive endplay. Also check starter drivegear for signs of misalignment It is possible that starter mount has not been drilled straight (don't bother if problem did not exist before first starter replacement unless it failed one month after you bought vehicle.)

Put new starter on a 1984 Ford ranger xlt 4x4 2.8 6 cylinder. The starter has a ruff crank start then it won't start nomore just makes a sound like the starter is bad won't turn over. What is the...

Many vehicles need to have the starter aligned. When you removed it did you find any small metal shims anywhere under the retaining bolts, etc. If you don't put them back in the alignment of the starter will be off and the starter drive will not properly engage the flywheel, this can jam or even break the started drive or flywheel teeth.

1984 ford ranger 4x4 2.8l is pulling hard to left and front left wheel is smoking and locking up

Dear Smoking And Locking.......
It sure sounds to me like you are having a brake issue on the lf of your vehicle..Obviously your lf brake assembly is not releasing. You could have a seized caliper, a restricted lf brake hose, a restricted brake line, or pad material that is unsafe, it's time to get those brakes inspected ASAP!!!! Brake repairs on that year of vehicle are fairly simple for the first timer....if you need any more help just get back to me ...THX HOPE I COULD HELP!!

Most likely it is that the ring rear teeth (on the flywheel) have been chewed up. Take out the starter and have someone turn the motor by hand and watch the teeth as they go by... there will be one or more areas of damage to the teeth. If the teeth look ragged all the way around the best fix is to pull the trans and replace the flywheel. If it's just a few teeth and they aren't absolutely mashed it may be possible to dress them up with a small file... use the file to knock down any burrs and smooth the bevels that let the pinion engage smoothly... if the starter pinion is all mashed then begin again with another starter... I have done this successfully with ring gears that aren't already a total loss... it's kind of tedious but it's worth a shot to keep from pulling the trans. Importantly, remember not to repeatedly grind the starter... at first sign of this pull out the starter and investigate the cause... it will save headaches later... Hope this helps... ;-)

7 starter`s in a year

Did the original starter have shims? It may need some. Get a delco starter and new bolts. Rebuilt non delco starters give trouble and do not last. Check flywheel teeth.

1989 ford ranger 2.3l starter keeps buning out after 3-4 months

After 20 years of use, it would not hurt to replace not only the positive starter cable, but the negative cable from the battery to ground, and look for the ground wire from the chassis to the motor. An old connection can cause a lot of trouble. Never use those clamp on terminal repairs, always buy a good new cable.

Kinda sounds like it is the flywheel. Next time it happens, take the starter off, and look or feel the flywheel. If it is ground down, you will need to get one put in.
