Question about 1996 Nissan Maxima
My 1996 nissan maxima starts fine, however recently started to show engine check light. Once in a while, if I do not give it a gas or slow down a bit it starts to die down. Sometimes it also vibrates a lot. Took it to local mechanic, after running scans he said I would need to change O2 sensors (there were three codes, but he said we should try first with O2 sensor..I do not know which one I just found out there are three O2 sensors in maxima - he is quite confusing and keeps no record of scans well). I changed O2 sensor, however light came back again. This time scan indicated knock Senosor. I changed that too. But ...light came back again, this time scan says bank 1 sensor 1 and throttle sensor. Now he is saying he may put the wrong O2 sensor first time and willing to replace it for free. Mechanic seems to be honest guy but not sure if understand the problem well. Can anybody indicate what might be going on. So far I have already spend hundreds of dollars not sure what to do?
1) You better check the 'Idle control relay' - and pray this is not your computer - who may be shorted ( The Computer that govern all elec. functions in the car - is also getting signals from your Mothor Mounts' to ensure a more balanced ride' If one or more of the Motor Mounts ( There are 3 ) are defective - they send a signal to the computer - and the yellow light ( Check engine soon) - will appear'
2) A Computer can only be fixed by a Nissan dealer ( est. $750 ) 3) The Idle control valve - can be adjusted too ( Again - by a Nissan Dealer only .
4) It is NOT an easy problem nor cheap . In short - your best bet is with the dealer - and ask them for a diagnostic ONLY ( est. $100 ) Don't tell the dealer what YOU think or did .......just tell them the 'Yellow light comes on' .......they'll take it from there.
Sorry I don't have better news today .
Best of luck

bank 1 refers to the side of the engine that #1 cylinder is on , and sensor 2 refers to downstream , after the catalytic converter. , this link shows bank 1 on a 2001 nissan maxima V6 being on the firewall side . if you had a 4 cylinder it would be downstream after the catalytic converter .
