pull the starter and inspect the teeth on the flywheel... you can see it in the same hole the starter goes in. the replacement starters are new or rebuilds.... and have you had work done to the motor to increase the compression on the motor ?

Did the original starter have shims? It may need some. Get a delco starter and new bolts. Rebuilt non delco starters give trouble and do not last. Check flywheel teeth.

My Suzuki vitara has been sitting for a couple of weeks. Temps have been hovering around freezing. Just put a new battery in. Car turns over but wont start. ?????

no year car? wow...
no country. sold world over, with 5 more more engines,
miles on car?
miles since last full tuneup.?
when was it last a reliable daily driver? last month or year?
my guess( useless) is it needs a tuneup,
ever heard of spark plugs? fresh and new??
a tuneup makes 99% of all engines start in cold weather,
Ill assume it cranks robustly but I can't hear it?
200rpm is fast robust starter 50 is no good. 50 RPM
a mechanic hears that, and just knows, in 1 nano second.
new battery means nothing, what was CCA spec.

My 1999 saturn SL2 i in stalled a new rebult stater motor about maybe one year ago , now the last 3 months about it's been a hit and miss on starting most of the time it starts then every so often

it might not be the starter it could just be a relay i would check the relay and if it is just clicking when you try to start it then that is probubly it if not maybe you have a bad batery

check for vacume leaks listen for a hissing sound if you here one but cant pin point it you can use a spray bottle of gas of can of ether both very flamable so be gentle and spray around the sound when the engine revs up theres your leak thats where i would start

check teeth on flywheel and check crankshaft for excessive endplay. Also check starter drivegear for signs of misalignment It is possible that starter mount has not been drilled straight (don't bother if problem did not exist before first starter replacement unless it failed one month after you bought vehicle.)

2000 s10 starter last only 2 months,

I would check current draw with a good ammeter & se how much current the starter draws when cranking. I owuld guess about 400 amps, but check with Delco. Other possibility is starter is binding on flywheel.
Did you disassemble one of the faulty staters to see if armature is rubbing on magents or coils?
Are these starters remans or new? Remans sometimes have problems.

Grinding Starter

Does it make the sound like you are trying to start an already running engine? My 05 did that about once every 3 months since I bought it new. I put 40k miles on it and it never changed, dealer could not reprodice it.
