Question about Nissan Maxima

1 Answer

Have 2001 nissan maxima with surging idle when in park or drive, but a stop. idle air control check, is ok; oxygen sensor replaced, but didn't solve the problem. Nissan dealer stated they checked everything. But it is the motor mounts that are bad, which caused the computer to malfunction. The check engine light comes on at times and stays on for days, then goes out. They (nissan dealer) checked everything, but the mounts are the problems. Any suggestions. Nissan is not standing behind their product and I mustpay over 1500.00 to get it ifixed. I've never heard of something so stupid. Help me please Thanks DLS

thanks very much. I'm trying to help a friend and I also doubt the story Nissan gave her about motor mounts. I will work with her and the dealership/ or also go to a independent car repair person in our city. I'll pass this info on to my friend.

I doubt mounts would cause surge. It could be throttle position sensor, camshaft position sensor or Map sensor. It would be good to have a non dealer shop put a computer on it and test it. Otherwise you can remove the sensor and use an ohmeter to make sure you are getting a current reading. If no reading, then sensor is at fault. you can view a free online repair manual at www.autozone.com. It is free to register

I have a 96 nissan maxima. It idles at about 1300 in park and 900 in drive. A friend suggested changing the spark plugs. Does this sound like a solution?

No spark plugs only produce spark to ignite the fuel mixture and do not control idle speed. Run fault codes to determine if there is a sensor fault as it should be idling around 900 rpm at idle and stay close to 900 in drive as the ECM will adjust the idle rpm to compensate for the extra load. Nissan maxima use special plugs that do not need changing

RPM rising and falling on Nissan bluebird fuel and ignition seems ok

1998 Nissan Maxima bluebird?
did not bluebird end in 1994?
ill answers for 1998 USA, if car is a JDM , well that be different

you have idle surge, (aka hunt)
the ECU controls idle at all times.
there are 10 or 2o things that can cause surge.
many tests. are you up for tests and buying tools, or just want a wild guess>?
1: EGR mains stuck open.
2: ISC stick (electric idle valve)
3: TPS switch ,not closed, at idle (that kills idle controls dead
4: lean AFR. and ISC has lost control or makes it hunt.
5: intake air leaks.
6: ECU in limphome. the USA cars (no location stated, bad)
all usa cars have OBD2 this year, ever use a $7 scan tool yet?
CEL stuck on running. never pulled the DTC errors?

ill stop here, there are 10 more. at least.

Iddle and Throttle problem!

had the same problem with the same year model, changed the idle position sensor, did not fix problem. took it to dealer because I was told that it had to have an idle relearn program ran on it, it didn't take and the dealer toldme that I need a ECM (engine control module) basically a new computer and it would cost with labor about 1100.00 dollars.

95 nissan maxima 3.0. have replaced knock sensor

I would have the charging system checked for over-voltage and AC ripple. There maybe a hidden wire harness problem if the charging system is okay. Wiggle test the wire harness while the engine is running to help locate the problem area. That is way to many parts replaced.
