That MNfisherman there is no cable on this van it is just a speed sensor I am going to try to chase the wires tomr but I was just hoping for a color of the wire or someone who has had this problem before

  • e_sykes Apr 15, 2009

Traced all wires today and run up it up in the air (jack stands) pulled the dog house and pulled all connected to the vss and computer and jupered a wire from computer to Instument panel and from crus to computer and stiil the same thing. Nexted hooked up to a scaner and it will display the speed so i think it is the cluster I will replace that tomorrow and let you all know what I find. Thanks

  • e_sykes Apr 20, 2009

No it was not the cluster any other ideas?

  • e_sykes Apr 21, 2009

The tran shift good and all gages work except the speedo/odometer/trip and no cruz control. Replace the instrument cluster and after checking all the wiring with in reason. I will put a new ecm(computer) in on thrusday and try that. If you have any other ideas please feel free to let me know. Thanks for all your help

If you replaced the sensor and still have same probllem. Then the problem is in the cable or display. You will have to trace all wires to see if there are any broken wires. You can use an ohmeter to test wires but not sure how you would do that while in motion. Is your check engine light on/

I would agree it does sound like the cluster.

If the trans shifts ok and the ck engine light does not come on then i
would say the speed sensor is working and the problem is RELATED to the
ins cluster or wiring. If the check engine light is on or the tranny shifts hard, than it is the sensor. If sensor, cluster, and wiring all turn out good, then the problem may be with the tranny signal itself. Check your fuses? If the other gauges are working, this probably still
works. Your problem exists somewhere in between. Consider pulling out
the gauge cluster and making sure all the connections are good? Perhaps
part of the circuit board behind the gauge shorted out.

Odometer not working on 1997 suburban

Hello BDG, The answer is no. If the VSS fails on your 97 Chevy, you will lose both speedometer and odometer functions. If your speedo is still working and your odometer is not, you have a broke odometer. This is a common failure with a lot of the older vehicles that were fitted with the mechanical odometer registers. Feel free to contact Kincer's Service for a repair salution.

Speed odometer

LSI 4cylinder or 3cylinder? engine. , all answer USA cars.
all answers now, are 3cylinder

did the odometer quiet too?
key fact
and in USA< connect any scan tool and see if VSS died.

the usa 96, 1.0L 3cyl has the VSS sensor in the speedo
and when the cable snaps, Speedo to transaxle flex drive cable.
snamps
the speed goes dead
the odometer goes dead
and Vss goes dead.
easy huh, if all 3 are dead.
but if speedo ONLY goes dead, that means ITS dead.
vss= veh.speed sensor. or MPH sensor.

SPEEDOMETER QUIT

You may need another speedometer. The speed sensor sends a signal to both the speedo and the odometer. So if the sensor fails, both meters would stop working.
The speedo gets power from the same circuit as the warning lights.

Have a 1991 GMC 1500 and the speedo works but the odometer does not - where do i start ? new part or relay or ?

If the speedo works and the odometer does not, I would say its the odometer that has failed. The speed sensor in the transmission works for both components so that leaves the odometer.

Is the speed sensor on a 97 sunfire internal or external?

The speed sensor would be mounted on the side of the transmission where the speedo cable used to be.

The sped ometer and odometer has quit, now i notice sometimes the transmission does not shift from first without stopping placing it in park. Turn off switch and start over and it will down shift at times

depending on the model and year there are so many sensors and solenoids on the trans and engine that it is going to be hard to fix without a scan tool.......but if this started at the same time the odometer and the speedo quit working i would be looking at the speed sensor in the trans and then the speed sensor that is made in the speedo head that both can make the speedo head and the odometer not work......i hope that this info will help you and if ican be of any other help let me know.......let me and fixya know if this was any help to you and a thumbs up would be appreciated.....good luck and have a blessed day............

The odometer and trip odometer for my 1996 ford explorer stop working. However, the speed still works. Any suggestions??

The gear in the speedometer assembly is broken causing the odometer and trip odometer to be inop. You can either buy a new speedo head or buy a gear kit from an online source (google Ford speedo odometer inop)for the kit.

the odometer is bad, if the speedo works ok.. you will need to send it off and have it replaced. most auto shops/dealers have a place that they send them off to .

Odometer/Trip Meter Not Owkring

it's most likely the cluster if one function works and the other doesn't. And, you likely have an electronic vehicle speed sensor that sends a signal to your analog cluster that then dispays your speed and odometer.
