Question about 2002 Pontiac Grand Am

1 Answer

2002 Grand Am GT Service vehicle soon light.

I recently (about a month ago) had the dimmer switch replaced for the dash lights, steering wheel lights, shifter lights, and climate control nobs... now sometimes when I turn on my car, the gauges take a while to work, and the electronics all stop working, the doors don't lock when shifted into reverse or drive, the windows wont go down, the sunroof wont open. The service vehicle soon light comes on. If I turn the car off, and a couple minutes later the light is gone and everything is working properly. I also have been having problems with my cruise control, it randomly turns on, and when I do have it on it randomly turns off without turning it of or pushing on the break. I have called my mechanic that changed the dimmer switch and they told me to bring it in, but then everything starting working properly. Do you have any idea what is going on? And do I have to bring it in when the service vehicle soon light is on, or can they scan it when the light is off? Thanks!

I would take it back to the shop. It sounds like a short of some kind.

Take to an Auto Zone store or other store that gives free code scan check. Some auto makers put built in alarms into the ECM to be reset by manufacture, now outlawed practice.

Lights that wont go away: Trac Off, ABS, Oil Change, Service Vehicle soon

Sorry tina , but you are going to need a new "cluster assembly" most likely. The cluster assembly is the dash instrument panel with all the gauges behind the clear lens. As an ex-pontiac technician of 13 years , pretty much every one of these with more than one light remaining on after start-up is going to need an "exchange" cluster. What the G.M. dealer does is removes the cluster from the car and "swaps" it with another one that has been refurbished-not always do they have a local authorized repair source though. I know the going exchange rate on these units is about $250.00. Hopefully they don't mark it up too much from there. I recommend you have it professionally checked out and diagnosed as you could also have an ABS code which could illuminate the trac off , abs light and check engine light simultaneously. Good luck..............Scott

Clicking noise coming from the dash

The multi-function (aka combination) switch probably has contaminated grease in the switch contacts from wear.

See:
http://www.wikihow.com/Fix-Grand-Am-Turn-Signals

for do-it-yourself repair instructions. You can also buy a new aftermarket switch, if you don't want to take apart the existing one and clean up the electrical contacts.

For example, see:
http://www.autozone.com/Ntt,SW1414/shopping/allResults.htm
(or just go to http://www.autozone.com/ and search for part #SW1414)

For 2003 Grand Am, it was listed as "Duralast / dimmer switch", but other makes & models may go by another name.

The OEM (GM) part number for mine was: 22676853
