Great car and one of my favorite ford's from the 80's. I wanted the 2 door coupe, but was too young to but one, now I never see them anymore.

The issue you seem to be have is either vacuum related or transmission related. I say this because when you put the car in drive, you add a load to the engine. If there's any kind of vacuum leak, the engine is them starved for air and can't idle like it should. I'm also going to assume that while in park or neutral, it idles fine??? There are 3 component's needed for an engine to run. FUEL, SPARK and AIR. Remove one of those from the mix and you ain't going anywhere. I mentioned the transmission before because I had a similar issue with an old 1966 Lincoln I had. Ran flawlessly, then one day at a light it kept dying. It was a main seal.leak between the engine and trans, but since you have a front wheel drive vehicle, I would start with checking the vacuum lines and hoses to make sure they're all connected and tight.

this sometimes occurs with age due to egr and intake becoming carbon filled , inturn requireing more vacuum inturn raising rpm to keep up , check all vac lines for poss leaks this will cause prob , to check for leaks crank engine let idle use can of wd40 or starting fluid and spray lightly around suspected area , if rpms raise when u spray then u have found ur leak

I have a 93 tempo 4 cyl. It starts on occasion. When its not starting, it turns over and fires/backfires/ pops but doesn't run. Sometimes pumping the gas pedal or flooring it gets it to run. It sputters at...

I would first begin with a good tune up with new plugs wires cap, rotor, check coil. injector can be clog also, try to add bottle of fuel injectors cleaner and add 93 octane of gas fill it half way and run it til empty and see that will also help. If you have high miles like over 100k have timing check, its good idea to change timing belt every 75-10k miles, if it jump time due to worn belt, the car will not run properly.
