Question about 2004 Dodge Ram 3500 Truck

1 Answer

I have a 2004 dodge ram 3500 4x4 diesel with an automatic. When starting out in first gear it revs to 2100rpm before shifting into second and when it shifts it seems to bee slipping or free wheeling until the accelerator is let off. Then it shifts and no problem with slipping. We changed the transmission fluid, filter and added friction modifer. There was no burnt smell or color in the old fluid, but this did not help. Is there something in the computer that might cause this problem?

I would take it to the transmission shop & have it tested. My neighbor had the same problem with his 03 last month and we had to end up rebuidling it. Trans shop here retail price is about 2800, parts for good rebuild cost 5-600 depending which torque converter you get, & if you have yours rebuilt, get the good one. Rick

OK. MR. MORA. SEEMS TO ME THAT YOU HAVE A PROBLEM THAT YOU CAN SOLVE, DUE TO THE FACT THAT YOU REPLACED THE MOTOR YOURSELF. WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO DO IS GO BACK TO BASICS, BOTH VISUAL AND MECHANICAL, FIRST OF ALL LOOK FOR LOOSE OR UNPLUGGED ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS, ESPECIALLY THE ONES AROUND THE FIRE WALL OR BACK SIDE OF ENGINE. ONE OR TWO MAY BE OFF OR NOT CORRECTLY PLUGGED IN. NEXT DUE TO TRANSMISSION NOT SHIFTING OUT OF DEFAULT GEAR (SECOND GEAR) YOU WILL NEED TO RETRIEVE THE FAILURE CODES THEY SHOULD BE RELATED TO TRANSMISSION DESCRIPTORS, WRITE ALL OF THEM DOWN. ALSO LOOK FOR LOOSE GROUNDING WIRES AND GROUND THEM PROPERLY. I THINK YOU WILL FIND THE PROBLEM. IF NOT REPOST FOR MORE HELP BUT, REPOST WITH THE FAILURE CODES. I WILL NEED THEM TO HELP YOU FURTHER.

drain transmission fluid, and flush with a product designed for this. Refill with specified fluid and this should solve the problem that you are experiencing. I have a 1998 truck that was doing the same thing and this solved my problem.

Transmission

You probably need to have linkages at transmission lubricated. There is one that controls throttle valve which tends to seize up on a regular basis. When it starts to seize, you will notice it staying in lower gear longer before it shifts up, and sometimes it will shift down hard when slowing down to stop.

2002 dodge ram 2500 diesel truck shifts in and out of gear around 40 to 50 miles per hour

When your truck is shifting like you mentioned you need to check the battery cables. Better yet just replace the cables. Even a small amount of corrosion can cause a break down in the flow of current to the trans computer and cause erratic shifting. New cables should fix you right up. If this does not take care you need to start looking into "noise" from the alternator wire or other electrical interferrence. Another possible solution is to install a Hapi Box which clears interferrence in the wire from the TPS to the trans computer. It worked on my '02 until the cables corroded. I stripped back about 6" and found a mess in there. Good luck. (oh, Dodge will seel you a new trans to fix this problem. Be ware.)

sounds like you should start by dropping the pan and changing the filter, put cheap fluid in it or reuse the old fluid if its not too bad bring it to a shop and have a transmission flush performed with a good flush machine your valve body is sticking and this should clear things up please rate -jeff
