Question about 1996 Ford Taurus

1 Answer

Electrical- Radio, wipers work in Accessory. but not in Run key position.  The A/C clutch doesn't seem to be engaging with switch. I have checked all fuses, relays in engine and passenger compartment. Replaced ignition switch, also. Cannot find problem.

The only part left in that problem would be the lock cyl. and keys is where i'd go.

Ignition switch in off position. I can remove key but all components are not off. Wipers will still come on and windows will still go down. Ignition switch??

What make model an year vehicle ? If you open the door do they still work ! Vehicles have Retained Accessory Power (RAP) this allows radio , windows an wipers to work for about 10 minuets after key off or until one the doors is open !

Why do my wipers and radio work with my key turned back but not with key on?

It's possible that the electrical switch (aka ignition switch) and/or tail piece of the lock cylinder is faulty. With the key on, check to see if they will work when applying slight turning pressure to the key. Not enough pressure to turn the engine off or engage the starter, but just enough to move it from the switches detent.

Wiper wiring diagram

Those are accessory functions working off the ignition switch when in accessory position or run position of the key. Were you to check if the wiper and radio fuse had power to them in the run or accessory position as they should, likely they would not. Power from the switch goes to the fuse panel, powering the fuses and circuits that only work with key in on or acc., either a direct wire to the fuse panel or sometimes, fuses get power from an accessory relay that sends power to fuses, but relay has to get a signal from a good working switch before it powers the fuses.
What I'm trying to say, is the bad switch is probably the reason you have no wipers, radio, or mirrors.

Car turns over but won't start fuel injector fuse and ignition fuses are good but no power is getting to them. also the stereo and wipers only work when ignition is on accessory. when its on r

Sounds like it could be a bad ignition switch-the electrical part, not the lock cylinder. When key is in the on position (run), those fuses should be powered. Are all the maxi-fuses good? They distribute power throughout the car's electrical circuits-like the fuse panel, for instance, so check the maxi-fuses. If good, probably the ignition switch is bad.

What does a clutch pedal position switch do?

It tells the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) what position your clutch pedal is in (pretty much like the name implies). The PCM will not allow the starter to work unless the clutch pedal is in the down position. The purpose is to keep you from starting the engine with the clutch engaged so the vehicle doesn't jump forward and kill somebody when you twist the key.

1989 Jeep Wrangler no power when key is in on position

Honestly, it sounds like a bad ignition coil. When they get corroded inside they will draw power on a scale much higher than anything else on the vehicle. It is a coil and it's job is to take a little power and make a lot of it. If it's only when the key is in the "run" position, that is likely the case. The only real difference between the two positions is that in the run position there is power being delivered to the ignition system. Good luck.

I have a 99 Jeep Wrangler and the turn signals, wipers, and radio work when i turn the switch back to AC. But when i actually start my car none of the three work. No idea what it could be?

Very likely the ignition switch is bad. both run and accessory terminals should be engaged in the run position. Sounds like that's not happening.

The blinkers and wipers and radio dont work unless the key is turned backwards, if the jeep is running none of these work, this is a 1999 jeep wrangler tj

sounds like the accessory side of the ignition switch is not working. When the key is on run position the same wire that is hot coming out when the key is turned to accessory should be hot, along with the ignition wire that runs the engine. (hot meaning it has 12v)

I have a 2001 Ford Windstar. I can start the engine and it runs just fine. However, I have no radio, heat, wipers (all the accessories). They work when you turn your key to accessories, but they dont work...

I think a new ignition switch would avoid the torching of your sick van.
It may not help but try this:
- Make sure you have the radio on in the accessory position, then switch to the 'run' position; you needn't start the car.
Jiggle with (deserved) anger on the key - well, without breaking it, and watch the radio display to see if it will flicker when you do this. If it does, then the switch section that should contact in both Accessories & Run has failed.
Most radios don't instantly turn on but delay a second or two,  therefore the attention to the display.
