Question about 1991 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

1991 Cavalier starts only when it feels like it

Just bought this car and it only starts periodically. I thought it was the battery but it is not. The starter was about to fall off and a mechanic fixed that and said he did not think I needed a new one. It doesn't appear to be the alternator and I have not been able to have an auto parts store run a check on the electric system because I don't want to get stuck somewhere, again.
What I did find though was a square socket type thing coming off some of the wires that go to the alternator which looked like it should be plugged into a square socket right in front of the battery. This "socket" looked all melted and someone had rigged an insallated wire between two of the slots, when I pulled off this wire, the radiator fan stopped, when I stuck them back in, it worked again. I don't know if this "socket" could be the problem or not???? The started doesn't click or make any weird noises and just starts fine, when it decides to start. Maybe it's the alternator??? Someone Please Help!! Thanks

I meant to say that this "socket" comes off of wires that go to the starter, not alternator.

Oh yeah, and I forgot to say, when I turn the key, nothing happens at all, no noise, nothing, but the check engine light comes on and under that light the battery light comes on - I bought a new battery so that's not it. Otherwise nothing, just the lights, no clicking, nothing.

I realized the problem I was having. I had sprained my left ankle and was not depressing the clutch enough at times. That was it, end of story.

2004 chevy cavalier not starting after changing battery

When taking battery cables loose, I try to use memory saver. Hoping there won't be any problems on start-up? Are you saying the starter motor cranks good, but, won't start? If so, have helper crank it, while you check for spark at the spark plugs--check proper fuel pressure--check fuel injector pulse. If the starter motor won't even crank, then have to check voltage and ground for the starter motor. Any starter testing, make sure tranny is in park or neutral and functional parking brake is set.

1991 ford escort battery keeps dying

Check and clean and tighten all battery, starter, and alternator connections. Also the battery and engine to chassis grounds. Did you have the battery " load tested" as a good test requires?
Take the battery out and have it charged up. If the alternator is good, you should not have any more problems. But if you need a jump after a few days to start it, then either the alternator or the battery is just not up to par. Have the alternator tested while on the car and running.
Good luck.

My 1991 Cavalier doesnt have charge so i charged the battery and started it and ran it for about 15 minutes than shut it off and tryed to turn it back on but didnt turn on. Whats the problem?

Check alternator. Voltage at battery should be at least 14 volts with engine running. If you don't have a voltmeter, take it off and parts store will test it free before selling you a new one. Please let us know if you have more questions.

1991 cavalier, no spark coils and ignition control

I think that in your car too, the crank position sensor starts the ignition sequence. I'd check there first.

Front end chunking sound

Your two thoughts are probably correct. If you feel it more in your seat, it's probably the mounts. If you feel it more in the steering wheel, CV shafts.

1996 cavalier will not crank

when it wont crank, you will need a test lite to ck the small wire at starter for a 12 volt signal when commanded to start by the key. also make sure there is 12 volts from battery going to larger wire on starter. if so and still wont crank, starter replacement is probable. (assuming grounds are clean) they can be very intermittent. another quick test would be while trying to start, holding key in start position, rap lightly on starter with hammer to see if it kicks, if so, replace starter.

If you have a multimeter, check the voltage on the battery with the car running. You should have 13.5 to 14.5 volts dc. If you only have 12 volts, then your alternator is not charging, and you probably bought a battery for nothing.
