The problem was in the dome light itself. It is being replaced. The problem could have been caused by my son tucking and stapling a detached headliner around the dome light resulting in a ground problem that also shorted out other electrical systems. The exact cause is unknown.

1998 Jeep Grand cherokee has an anti theft system that comes on at unpredicable times. Do not have a remote for the door.. Only have a key. The dome lights in the jeep also come on every time a bump is...

dome light issue is usaully the rear lifgate switch coming apart. and yes this would drain the battery if left unnoticed for a while. you can also pull the dome light relay under the kick panel on the passengers side...good luck

Interior lights keep coming off and on how do I disconecct the wire?

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. If you don't want the light on inside, all you have to do is pull the fuse for the lights. That would be the easiest route. It should be labeled in your fuse box, something like interior lights or dome.

Interior lights in my 98 grand cherokee won't turn. No open door signal and it's not the rear dome light switch turned on.

dimmer switch on the dash... lower it. it should click and should shut off the interior lights.

Dome won't go off 1995 grand cherokee

Check door jamb switches or the maybe the tailgate is not closing properly. (If it has ever been in an accident, even the slightest misalignment could prevent any of those switches from closing properly.)

Another possibility is that there is a short in the actual interior switch.

Or, if you have the interior lights that automatically dim after so many seconds, then it's possible that the module is shorted in the on position. (But then all the lights should be on if this is the case.)

Interior lights wont go out

First you can check your door adjar switches. Unplug one at a time to see if your dome light shuts off. If it shuts off replace switch that was unplugged. If this does not help your problem is the ignition switch. Thanks
