1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport has been at dealership 3 days. Unable to determine why interior dome light will not go out. Unable to locate ground wire or cause.
The problem was in the dome light itself. It is being replaced. The problem could have been caused by my son tucking and stapling a detached headliner around the dome light resulting in a ground problem that also shorted out other electrical systems. The exact cause is unknown.

on yours it is different PAGE 32 USERS GUIDE QUOTES, "To protect the battery, the interior lights will
turn off automatically 15 minutes after the
ignition is moved to the LOCK position.
THIS SAVES BATTERY IF THEY FAIL.(MY COMMENT)
"This
will occur if the interior lights were switched
on manually or are on because a door is open.
This includes the glove compartment light
and the cargo area light.
To restore interior
light operation, either place the ignition in
the ON/RUN position or cycle the light
switch."
THIS IS A SUPER GOOD FEATURE,. WRECKING $175 BATTERY IS NOT. CHEAP OR EVER FUN.
check fuses. with a meter.
bad looking fuses are bad
some bad ones, look good, so mech always uses a meter.
always. or wastes vast time, doing nothing much good.
Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. If you don't want the light on inside, all you have to do is pull the fuse for the lights. That would be the easiest route. It should be labeled in your fuse box, something like interior lights or dome.
use a voltage meter to check the circuits for cotinuity if they are grounded out you may end up with even worse problems down the line. volt meter should read no load.
Check door jamb switches or the maybe the tailgate is not closing properly. (If it has ever been in an accident, even the slightest misalignment could prevent any of those switches from closing properly.)
Another possibility is that there is a short in the actual interior switch.
Or, if you have the interior lights that automatically dim after so many seconds, then it's possible that the module is shorted in the on position. (But then all the lights should be on if this is the case.)
First you can check your door adjar switches. Unplug one at a time to see if your dome light shuts off. If it shuts off replace switch that was unplugged. If this does not help your problem is the ignition switch. Thanks
My interior lights now stay on when I close the door on my 97 Cherokee
sport, even thouth the interior switch is in the off position.
